Blessed Self,
Hari OM and Namaste!

THOUGHTS:

Molding Our Children - Between 10 and 25 Years - By Swami Chinmayananda!

During the ages of 10-14 years, as their minds have unfolded to an extent, the child would feel more interested if there are ideas that it can wrestle with and enjoy the flashes of wonders and understanding of life and its ways. Gita for Children, I Love you are typical types of literature they can enjoy and enrich upon.

During the ages of 15-18, encourage them to express their ideas about what they have studied. Their shyness must be carefully drained away from them. Encourage them, through noisy compliments and real rich presents for what they have tried to express. Never at this stage should we criticize the mistakes they make. Leave them alone to grow up; do not hasten them.

Parents have to develop their children by unfolding their talents in them.

Between 18-20 years of age, they need a deeper understanding and require some early steps in sadhana, so that they can with diligence and practice control the mind on-rush of their own wild and crazy mind. A little Japa and daily sessions of a few moments of inner quietude of their mind will be very helpful to them. We can in slow steps lift them to conviction in themselves that man needs self-control if he is to control his own mind and that without such a tuned-in mind, excellence in their life's activities cannot be assured.

When the youngster reaches the ages of 20-25 we can readily initiate him into the highest. Without any hesitation teach them the Upanisads (Isa, Kena, and Kathopanisad) and the Gita (chapters 2,3,6,7,12, and 13). Rest let him study by himself. Leave him alone to grow up at his own pace.

This kind of a graded system, if followed faithfully, can more effectively complete the education of our growing generation, both in their inner values of life and also in their outer objective science. The secular education will make them proficient to meet the challenges in their professions and the values of life inculcated will mold them to be better persons in the society.

We the parents think that we have to spend a lot of money ON our children. In fact, we should spend the money IN our children.

With Prem and OM
