Blessed Self,
Hari OM and Namaste!

THOUGHTS:

To the Teachers - 2 - By Swami Chinmayananda!

Merely adding one more instruction to the students, or giving them more and more data is not education. It can at best become 'instruction'. A place where instructions are imparted is an 'institute', not a school.

A school is where we bring out from the students the beauty that was already there, which even their parents never suspected. True education is not merely imparting more and more data about the material world and objective sciences to the student, but helping him to remove the clouds in his own mind, his false values, his false attachments, his false understanding of himself and the world around him.

It is here that spiritual education, the study of the Gita and the Upanisads, would help the student to unveil his beauty. If it is done early in life, it becomes a permanent and beautiful personality. That is the reason why we insist that along with secular education, a little of the 'personality structure' also be developed in the children. It is for this purpose that teachers are also given education, in order that they can be entrusted with this science which is the heart of the Hindu culture.

Academic knowledge or scholarship alone cannot mold character. Look at the character of Ravana. What a great Vaidika scholar and devotee of Lord Siva! Wellread, and extremely educated, and yet, look at his character. His own knowledge he could not enjoy, because his mind was crowded by lower impulses.

A mere building is not sufficient. It is in the hands of the teachers how they mold tomorrow's children and feel a sense of satisfaction at having fulfilled their duties.

The teachers should not think that 'I am only a school teacher'. The reward of a true teacher is not in terms of money. You are silently creating tomorrow's heroes - the mighty men and women of action, the creative people of tomorrow's world. And with that attitude, there is not only a sense of dedication, a high sense of inspiration, but also the satisfaction that you are creating the great people of our community.

With Prem and OM
