Blessed Self,

THOUGHTS:

Meditation Tips - A Common Mistake We commit - By Swami Chinmayananda!

The positive approach of remembering an ideal is easy and natural for a healthy human mind. It is entertainment for a mind to act positively and to remember a definite thought given to it. This positive attitude, which is the nature of the mind, is ignored by all the over-insistent moralists and ethical puritans. The parents and elders, teachers and professors, priests and panditas, and the scriptures have all been constantly preaching the non-performance of certain types of thoughts. Most priests are persistently preaching 'don'ts', but this approach is not very effective.

For example, as you wake up tomorrow morning try not to remember four ordinary things such as broom, doormat, ladder and spoon. And you will find that your first thoughts will be directed toward these banned objects. On the other hand, if the advice was to remember gratefully the source of all energy, the sun that has risen in the east, it is possible that the mind can be effectively led away from entertaining the wrong thoughts.

In all religions there are positive and negative aspects of thought life prescribed for the training of the mind, which includes many 'do's' and 'don'ts'.  Decadence in culture and religious downfall generally visit an era wherein the negative aspects of the social thought discipline are overemphasized. The moment the positive side of religion is taken up for serious study, a renaissance of revival is ushered in.

God is conceived of, in all religions, as the embodiment of all positive qualities of a human mind, and therefore, to remember Him constantly is to change the quality of thoughts in the devotee's mental life. Since positive thoughts bring about tranquility and peace, the quality of thoughts in the mind is also controlled and chastened.

To remember the Lord at all times and act in the world with an awareness that He is the all-seer is the most positive spiritual practice for seekers striving to evolve. Thereby we come to transform our inner personality from its present disintegrated condition to a state of harmony and efficiency.

Sans faith in the Teacher, the student is a wayfarer entirely blind, completely deaf and sadly paralyzed.
