Spotlight: Iowa State

In this newsletter, we turned the spotlight on students at Iowa State.  Learn about how students are creating businesses, winning at competitions, traveling to conferences, and how some students are thinking big to solve global + social issues!  Let us congratulate each of these students, as their achievements are no small feat!

KinoSol Thinks Globally:
How do we stop post-harvest food loss?

It all began with the simple goal of improving the lives of rural families.  One third of all food on earth is wasted, which hits hardest for small scale third-world farmers. With a passion to change this statistic, KinoSol was created using dehydration as an easy and inexpensive way to avoid post-harvest loss.  By offering a storage unit, farmers are able to increase the availability of food during low and no harvest periods.

Meet the team behind KinoSol:

These four founders of KinoSol, share a new Iowa State major-- Global Resource Systems (pictured L to R): Clayton Mooney, Elise Kendall, Ella Gehrke, and Mikayla Sullivan.

The entrepreneurial impact keeps growing.

Not only are the four founders gung-ho about growing their for-profit Public Benefit Corporation (B-Corp), KinoSol units provide mobility to farmers and gives them new opportunities.

"KinoSol provides entrepreneurial opportunities for farmers in developing countries, by promoting dehydration that will allow excess produce to be sold at market," shares Clayton Mooney.

Women in Innovation:
Jessica Graham

With little room to pack any shoes in her luggage for the CEO conference trip a few years ago, Jessica had an 'aha' moment which sparked
Sky High Heels -- a removable high heel shoe.

Since then, the momentum keeps building.  Jessica has pitched in many competitions.  In October, she won the ISU Pappajohn Innovation Pitch Competition award for Best New Innovation.

Jessica not only stands out in competitions, but recently was awarded the prestigious Iowa Women Of Innovation, Collegian Innovation & Leadership award!   She will be finishing her senior year studying Management, International Business, and Entrepreneurial Studies.

Twenty Iowa State students traveled to the Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization conference at Kansas City on November 5-7th.  There were over 800 college students, faculty and young entrepreneurs from around the world at the 2 1/2 day CEO National Conference to network, learn and be inspired to pursue their entrepreneurial passions.

The opportunity to meet the great minds behind Culvers,, Sprint, HR Block and many more companies.

Iowa State students had the chance to network with like-minded students, but they also got the unique opportunity to meet the founders behind nationally recognized companies.  Jeff Hoffman, the founder of Priceline and also known for, ColorJar and CTI, keynoted a conference session.   Not only were students inspired after his talk, they also got the chance to sit down with him in a mentor session to ask questions and learn from one of the most successful serial entrepreneurs!

Nolan Herlocker, junior majoring in Industrial Technology with a minor in Entrepreneurial Studies, received the CEO Outstanding Chapter Leader (Gold) Award for his leadership as president of the ISU Entrepreneur Club!

"Because our focus on entrepreneurship at Iowa State is interdisciplinary and in every major, Nolan has purposely sought out speakers that touch all kinds of industries and interests." said ISU Pappajohn Center marketing and program coordinator, Diana Wright.  "We couldn't think of a better way to honor Nolan as a leader at Iowa State and while at CEO."
