HCA Mental Health Forum Wednesday 10 May 2017
HCA is hosting a forum to inform consumers about what the SA Mental Health Commission is doing, and what changes are taking place in mental health service provision. The forum will be held at HCA and will feature guest speakers Chris Burns, SA Mental Health Commissioner and Aaron Groves, Chief Psychiatrist. There will also be a stakeholder panel. Transforming Health Consumer and Community Engagement Committee (CCE) The Transforming Health CCE Committee meeting was held on Wednesday 12 March 2017. The communique summarising the discussion topics is available for download here.
Consumer Advocate Training in the Barossa HCA's Kathy Mickan and Karen Shepherd travelled to Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley on Tuesday 4 April 2017 to run our Introduction to Consumer Advocacy Training course. Ten participants took part and their positive feedback indicated, that the course gave a good overview of advocacy and covered a wide variety of interesting topics.
Easter 2017 HCA takes this opportunity to wish you a happy and safe Easter long weekend. The HCA office will be closed from 4.30pm Thursday 13 April until 8.30am Tuesday 18 April 2017.
Aged Care ''Complaints Matter'' Thursday 27 April 2017
The Aged Care Complaints Commissioner is holding a one-day event for consumers who have used the aged care complaints system in home and residential care, and people who work in the industry. "Complaints Matter" will highlight the process of a good complaint and provide best practice tips for resolving complaints to the satisfaction of everyone involved. Noarlunga Hospital Open Day Saturday 13 May 2017
Noarlunga Hospital is hosting an Open Day to showcase the recent upgrades to their day surgery unit. These upgrades aim to improve access to elective surgery for people living in Southern Adelaide. The Open Day will include hospital tours, a free sausage sizzle and face painting. There will also be an opportunity to talk to health professionals about the improvements that have been made to the hospital. You can find out more here.
2017 Lived Experience Works Conference Wednesday 24 May 2017
Registrations are now open for the 2017 Lived Experience Works Conference. This is a conference for people in mental health lived experience roles (paid and unwaged, Non-Government Organisations and Government sectors), their leaders and people who are interested in mental health lived experience as a profession. The conference will explore key learning from the lived experience narrative, what this looks like in practice in the work they do, within their organisation and life. SA Health’s draft Research Focus 2020 document has been developed following extensive consultation with the South Australian health and medical research sector. Feedback on this document is now welcomed. It will help determine what is included in SA Health's strategic framework, aimed at supporting health and medical research in South Australia. Housing, Homelessness and Mental Health Closes: Monday 24 April 2017
The National Mental Health Commission is holding a consultation with the aim of getting a better understanding of the connection between housing, homelessness and mental health. The Commission invites consumers, carers, families and support people to share their housing and homelessness experiences in relation to mental health. The National Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) and Aged Care Strategy Review Survey Closes: Friday 28 April 2017
Since the release of the CALD Strategy, there have been reforms in aged care placing a strong emphasis on the concepts of greater choice and control being put in the hands of the consumer, and the aged care system being accessible, equitable and inclusive for all older people. Feedback on the review of the CALD Strategy and the development of the Diversity Framework is now sought. You can find out more here
Draft South Australian Suicide Prevention Plan 2017-2021 Closes: Friday 19 May 2017
South Australians are invited to share their views on the new draft South Australian Suicide Prevention Plan 2017-2021. The draft Plan recognises the importance of an evidence-informed approach to suicide prevention, identifies priorities for South Australia to take action against suicide, and is strongly outcomes focussed. Feedback from consumers and carers on what they feel is important to be included will help to shape the Plan. You can find out more here.
Consultation: Strengthening monitoring of medicines in Australia Closes: Monday 1 May 2017
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is seeking feedback on proposed changes to strengthen the safety monitoring of medicines in Australia.The changes will apply to medicines only and will be implemented progressively from late 2017 onward. You can find out more here.
Healthy Ageing Research Consortium The Healthy Ageing Research Consortium has been funded to establish a comprehensive state-wide registry to support healthy ageing in South Australia. This registry will provide a unique data collection to guide evidence-based decision making for quality, coordinated, efficient and age-friendly services and practices. HCA is pleased to be participating and advocating for consumers in this innovative project. You can read the minister’s press release here.
BPD ‘community of peers’ A new online ‘peer to peer network’ has been established to raise awareness and increase understanding about Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) within the health system and the community. The network is supported by the BPD foundation. You can find out more here.
CHF - Sugar tax: Australia needs to hit a new sweet spot Consumers Health Forum of Australia (CHF) has written a blog post outlining that the government should implement a sugar tax, as Australia is falling behind when it comes to effective action to stem the increasing impact of obesity.
