Pastor's Perspective

When it comes to watching Christmas movies and holiday themed TV shows this time of year, I admit I am a bit of a junkie. I have to watch the old Christmas stand-bys…”A Christmas Story,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” and one of my favorites, “A Year Without a Santa Claus.” But I like to surf through some of the cable channels for something different occasionally. And I am most intrigued by the shows on TLC and HGTV about extreme Christmas lights in America like the ones we saw earlier. One of the most extreme Christmas decorations of all times is by the Faucher family in Delaware who have been merrily setting a neighborhood standard for 23 years - decking their halls with an astonishing one million Christmas lights. READ MORE

Will you consider a Christmas gift to Holy Trinity Community Church this year? Your generosity is the engine that powers our ministry and mission in the world. Without your gifts of time, talent and treasure, we cannot be the voice of social justice, acceptance and inclusion in the world. Please consider all that HTCC has done over the past year. No gift is too small. We appreciate your generosity all year long!

LAST SUNDAY OF ADVENT SERIES:

The Gospel Symbols of Christmas

12/24/17 Worship Theme: Gift Wrapped Presents

SACRED STORY: Luke 1:26-38

FOCUS VERSE: Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus.

SPIRITUAL QUESTIONS: The Christmas season is the epitome of a surprise party. It is filled with the anticipation of putting up the Christmas tree; shopping for presents for family and loved ones; and wrapping each surprise gift. But what about the anticipation of “unwrapping” our own selves through the process of spiritual transformation? How can the gift of “presence” change our relationships with God and others?

CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICES

Because of the high number of folks in our church who travel home for the holidays (including staff and worship team), we won’t be hosting a nighttime Christmas Eve service. But be sure to join us on Sunday morning. We'll be celebrating then!

Here are recommendations for other great services planned at our partner churches:
  • Brookmeade Congregational Church Candlelight Service at 5 pm, 700 Bresslyn Road, 37205 – http://brookmeadeucc.org
  • Howard Congregational Church Christmas Eve at 5 pm, 2802 Buchanan Street, 37208 - http://howarducc.org

NEW YEAR’s EVE celebration starts on Sunday morning, December 31 at 10 am! We’ve got a special service planned for our worship on the last Sunday in 2017. Come ready to PARTY during a church service you’ve never experienced before. Wear your party clothes and prepare for Epiphany (that means God showing up!) It will be a BLAST!
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Thanks to generous donations from Sally Thornton and Karen Pryor, our guests from the Room in the Inn received new winter coats, sweat suits and undergarments for the winter months. And much appreciation for the many other folks who brought in clothing items for these women. What a blessing to have such a wonderful and giving congregation! We are so thankful for your gifts to our ministries and mission of the church.
