Release date 21 April 2016
HSBC property chief announced as CREFC Europe incoming chair.
Steve Willingham, HSBC’s head of real estate finance for the EMEA region, will succeed Madeleine McDougall as chairman of CREFC Europe. Steve’s one-year term will begin at CREFC Europe’s Autumn Conference on 14 November.
Prior to joining HSBC in 2014, Steve was at global investment management firm BlackRock, where he was responsible for the opportunistic investment programme for their European PERE funds.
Steve will be looking to build on the successes of incumbent chairman Madeleine McDougall, head of institutional clients in Lloyds Bank’s commercial real estate business.
CREFC Europe is focused on creating a better regulatory environment and supporting well-functioning markets for all stakeholders involved in real estate finance across Europe. These range from clearing banks and those involved in the syndication and securitisation markets; to debt fund managers, investors and borrowers.
HSBC has been an active and engaged member at CREFC Europe. Prior to Matthew Webster heading to North America, he too served as chairman at CREFC Europe. Steve will be looking to focus on driving a greater understanding of the key role real estate debt plays in supporting the wider economy.
Other recent Board appointments alongside Steve are Mike Shields, Managing Director – Head of REF Western Europe, UK, USA and Structured Products at ING Real Estate Finance and Jane Hollinshead, Principal at IJD Consulting Ltd.
Steve Willingham, head of real estate finance – EMEA at HSBC, said: “I’m delighted to be succeeding Maddie in taking on the chairmanship of CREFC Europe. We’re at a pivotal time for the sector in terms of Europe’s economic position. In the face of this, there continues to be large regulatory and structural change happening across the banking sector, which will continue to have an impact on the way we do business. I look forward to working with Maddie and the rest of the CREFC Europe Board as part of the chairman team.
Peter Cosmetatos, chief executive of CREFC Europe, said:
“It’s a privilege to have Steve on board and it’s commendable that he, like many of our members, is able to contribute his expertise and time to shaping the future of our sector for all of those with an interest in real estate and the debt market that supports it.”
