Our Calling to Social Justice and Action

Presenter: Rev. Doug Huneke

Responding to God's call of justice and shalom, we are called to act in ways to bring about lasting social change.  Doug will share some of his work on social justice issues in Marin and beyond and how he has integrated his activism with a deep spiritual life.

Bio:  Doug Huneke served as the senior pastor for 30 years at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Tiburon, retiring in 2012. Prior to his installation at Westminster, he served at the University of Oregon as the Presbyterian University Pastor (campus ministry).  Committed to interfaith work, he co-founded the Marin Interfaith Council in 1982. He is committed to constructive community activism and human and civil rights particularly with the LGBT communities.

Loving Our Neighbors – The Mission Committee

Thanksgiving Food for Needy Families

Every Thanksgiving, the Ritter Center in downtown San Rafael provides the food necessary for a full Thanksgiving meal to around 150 individuals and families who are homeless or precariously housed. FPCSR partners with Ritter Center by collecting and packing 50 bags of food, plus a gift card for Safeway. Ritter Center staff has told us that the donations from FPCSR provide a significant percentage of the food that they give out at Thanksgiving, and that our contribution is especially appreciated because of its completeness and quality.

A small group of us will pack the bags of food on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. in Canoles Hall. Donations of food this week must be left at the church no later than Friday evening, Nov. 13. (If you don’t know the backdoor combination, call Ann or any member of the Mission Committee.)

Needed Food Items:
Whole kernel corn (canned) OR Green beans (canned)
Stuffing mix
Cranberry sauce
Gravy mix
Yams (canned)
Onions (fresh)
Potatoes (10 lb. bags)
Fruit (canned)
Olives (canned)
Cake mixes & frosting

No glass please.

Financial contributions are also needed and should be identified as being for the Thanksgiving food. We will get 50 $10 gift cards to include in the bags. Questions?  Email Barbara Royall – or Leslie Purdy –

Marin Organizing Committee (MOC) leadership training sessions

Marin Organizing Committee (MOC) is offering leadership training sessions by Zoom, one in November and three in December. The Mission Committee highly recommends that you attend some or all of these.  You will find them empowering!  What's more, they will demystify MOC for you. MOC is a powerful organization helping to rebuild the common good.  Right now they are working to support the Marin County purchase of motels for use as housing for the homeless and to provide them with social safety net services.
