Hi <<First Name>>,

Is fear stopping you from doing something?

This week, stop to ponder this quote by Vincent van Gough:

“I tell you, if one wants to be active, one mustn’t be afraid to do something wrong sometimes, not afraid to lapse into some mistakes. To be good — many people think that they’ll achieve it by doing no harm — and that’s a lie, and you said yourself in the past that it was a lie. That leads to stagnation, to mediocrity...

You don’t know how paralyzing it is, that stare from a blank canvas that says to the painter, "You can’t do anything." The canvas has an idiotic stare, and mesmerizes some painters so that they turn into idiots themselves. Many painters are afraid of the blank canvas, but the blank canvas is afraid of the truly passionate painter who dares — and who has once broken the spell of "You can’t."

Life itself likewise always turns towards one an infinitely meaningless, discouraging, dispiriting blank side on which there is nothing, any more than on a blank canvas. But however meaningless and vain, however dead life appears, the man of faith, of energy, of warmth, and who knows something, doesn’t let himself be fobbed off like that. He steps in and does something..."

The thought "What's the point of it all" has likely crossed most of our minds at one point or another - whether it's when you're preparing for exams, setting new goals or attempting to try something new. But van Gough argues that being paralysed by this thought robs us of the opportunity to continue taking action - not despite it, but because of it (to create our own meaning?)

Big Bold Changes

The shock to the electric car market

Electric vehicles only make up a relatively small share of the automotive market — just 3 per cent as of last summer. With COVID-19 disrupting supply chains and consumer behaviour, it seemed that the market was heading into a slump. The European market, however, is still pulling through as Tesla charges through with their online-only sales model. Despite players like GM hoping to end petrol and diesel sales, the US market is falling behind in the race.

Start-ups on a Social Mission

Polymateria is based at the Imperial College White City Campus. Their website claims that they produce ‘fully and safely biodegradable fugitive plastics leaving no microplastics – the only technology with evidence verified by new international standards’. With the combined efforts of leading scientists, they created revolutionary proprietary plastic formulations that has undergone rigorous testing to ensure optimal functioning. Given that plastics take up to 400 years to degrade, only 12% of all plastics that have existed since the 1950’s, has been fully incinerated. It’s clear that there is an urgent and imperative need to find solutions for the amounting plastic waste in our planet.

Feeling confused in your 20's?

Kyling Saw, our very own Moonshot committee member has been working on an amazing project - an online forum where people in their 20's can 'feel lost together' by joining an open conversation about navigating adulthood. You can submit posts anonymously, or respond to other people's threads. Just pour your heart out - this is like an online journal where you can relate to others, without having to expose yourself. Who knows, maybe you'll discover something about yourself along the way. And if not, at least you know you're not the only one who feels lost at times.

Quote of the week

“Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the tea pot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend”
