Letter from the Editor

The slideshow theme on the website for September/October is "Autumn".  So if you have any paintings depicting autumn, please send them to Anna now and indicate "slideshow" in the subject line.  The theme for November/December is "winter holidays" Jpegs need to be at least 600-800 pixels in height.

Check out our website for a day by day synopsis of the Desmond O'Hagan workshop via Marianne Fyda's diary and notes of the sessions.

Just moved from the newsletter to the website are the lending library and the new member information.  Both items are under "Resources".  Website:

Reminder:  If you have checked out anything either in the past or just recently from the lending library, would you please email Susan Nicholas Gephart?  Also, you may return any materials at the August 14th meeting.

The Meet your Members column has been eliminated as no one seemed to be interested enough to send in a "bio" even after many requests in various newsletters.

No new members have been reported this month.

Reminder: News deadline is the last Saturday of the month.

"A painting requires a little mystery, some vagueness, some fantasy.
When you make your meaning perfectly plain you end up boring people."

Desmond O' Hagan 2016 Workshop WrapUp

We had a very successful 3-day workshop with Desmond O’Hagan.  His slide show on Thursday evening was very informative and set us up for the three days of the workshop.  We were pleased to see several members who were not attending the workshop come for the slide show.
On Friday we had 11 people participating and on Saturday and Sunday, there were 9.  Everyone got a lot of personal attention.  Each morning he talked for about an hour on some topic relating to his process or other valuable information like taking photos and the business of art.  He shared a lot of information in a short amount of time.  After that, we spent the day working on our projects under his watchful eye.  Each afternoon, he spent the last hour doing a demo.
Our final accounting, including a society subsidy that had been included in the original budget to keep the cost reasonable for participants, showed a small profit for the workshop.
Desmond was impressed by our organization and the attention to detail for the workshop.  As an instructor, has a lot of varied experiences with the organizations he visits and ours was one of the nicest.
On a personal note, this is the last workshop for which I will be responsible.  It has been my pleasure to serve as workshop chair.  I enjoy the process.  It has never been work for me.  I want to thank the people who have helped with tasks like setting up and tearing down the room for each workshop.  I could not have gotten everything done without them, especially Marianne Fyda and Elaine Walker.  I also want to thank everyone who has attended the workshops over the last several years.  Without your support, the workshops cannot take place.
