Current News

Letter from the Editor

I am just learning how to use this newsletter program, so there will be nothing elaborate this year… just text.  Send me any news you have about your accomplishments or anything art related that you think would be of interest to the Society members.

All members will be highlighted in the Meet Our Members section at one time or another and will need to submit a bio.  When you read through what Marianne wrote for her bio in the last newsletter, you will get an idea of what to include in yours.  It doesn't have to be just like hers.  Use hers as a guide. Maybe you already have something on your website…use that.  When you complete your write-up, send it to me and I will put it in a file for future use.  Please don’t put this off.  You do have a little time, though, as the officers will be featured first.

At this time, I am thinking about publishing the newsletter in the months between meetings… March/April, June/July/ September/ October.  My thoughts were that this would be a way to have continuity throughout the year.  I’d like to know what you think.

If you have any suggestions as to how to improve the newsletter by adding or subtracting sections, please let me know.

Pastel Expressions Update

On May 3rd, members of our pastel society will participate in a paint-out from 2pm-5pm on the grounds of the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Ligonier during the “free museum day” there.  (However, if anyone wishes to paint all day, they are welcome to do so.)  If you would like to take part in this, please email Marianne Fyda and let her know as travel arrangements need to be made.  gyfyda@windstream.net

Mike Beeman Workshop Update

We have 12 registered for Mike Beeman.  Our max is 16, so we have just 4 seats left.  If we fill the workshop, we will start a waiting list.  It would be good to get your registration in soon to guarantee your seat.  If you need a registration form, contact Judy Leasure at leasure.judy@gmail.com.

Volunteers Needed

Volunteers are needed to help plan the Society’s birthday party on November 8.  If interested, contact Marianne Fyda.  gmfyda@windstream.net

Vice-President in Charge of Website Changes

Kim Gates Flick, vice-president of CPPS, is now in charge of keeping the website up-to-date and will be sending information to our webmaster, Karl Leitzel once a month.  If you have any news, been juried into shows, won awards, or have something to share, please send the info to Kim. kdf2@psu.edu

Program Committee

Kathleen Muffie-Witt, Anne Kenyon, and Virginia Belser are preparing art happenings for our group.  Activities being considered are pre-meeting  exercises, member-led workshops for members and guests and outreach programs.  These types of activities fit very well with the goals of the Society.

The winter paint-in saw 8 or 9 painters including 2 watercolorists who
enjoyed pot luck lunch along with painting.

There have been 40 paintings chosen from PPAL and CPPS members to
hang in the Pastel Expressions show which will be in Ligonier at Southern
Alleghenies Museum this summer. Judging for CPPS were Virginia Belser,

Volunteers for demo painting are needed for Ligonier. Please let Marianne

quarterly.

Program committee needs data on past member lead workshops and

Since we won’t be having our Candy Store this year, Marianne suggested a
bulk order to The Fine Art Store. She also said a trip to Rochester may be
considered.

Since CPPS will be celebrating our 10th year ideas were
solicited from members. We should plan to celebrate in November.
Marianne also asked members to consider what they would like the
organization to do. Make up your wish list.

Next meeting will be in May instead of April as it has been in recent years.
Meeting was adjourned at 3:15 pm.
Respectfully submitted, Pat McDannel, Secretary

Meet your Members

Pat McDannel, Secretary

My first formal instruction in art came about during my senior year in high school and I was hooked.   I graduated from Edinboro University (then Edinboro State Teachers College) with a BS in Art Education and took my first teaching job in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  The job only lasted six months because I was pregnant and in the 50’s most school districts did not want to have their students exposed to pregnant women.

My family grew rapidly; I had 4 babies in 7 years so for me teaching was not practical.  In the late 60’s, I taught in Penns Valley School District for 2 years.  We then moved to DuBois where my husband was an administrator in the DuBois Area School District.  There were no teaching jobs available in art, but a group of young mothers were looking to start a pre-school program.  It was a first for the area.  I had been thinking along those lines myself, so I was delighted to be responsible for creating a program for 3 and 4 year olds, which I named PAINT and PLAY SCHOOL.  I was teacher/director there until we moved to Philipsburg.  Shortly after we arrived, the YMCA was looking to set up a similar program, so I did theirs, also.  After 11 years, I decided to move on and went to work for the Centre County Office of Aging where I was a senior center director for 4 years and then moved into program director at the main office in Bellefonte.

My degree in Art Education provided a good background for all my work-related accomplishments, but painting skills had to be developed on my own.
When I lived in Philipsburg, I worked with Chuck Hall of Coburn in oil and pastel and developed some watercolor skills on my own.

After I retired in the early 90’s, I began painting seriously.  That is not to say I had ever ignored my creative side.  Over the years I had become an accomplished seamstress and loved creating in the kitchen and decorating my home.

When I became a member of Central Pennsylvania Pastel Society, I was able to take advantage of the expert instructors who have been provided to us through this great organization.  The interactions with members of this group continue to provide inspiration and motivation.

I now live in Du Bois, Pennsylvania in a lovely retirement village where I have my own cottage which includes a studio. I have freedom to paint, read, create or just enjoy my family and the beautiful countryside that Pennsylvania presents season after season.
