Quote of the Month

From Treatise on Painting by Leonardo daVinci:

Light, Shadow, and Colors
"The artist, who seeks glory from the ignorant masses---who only want beautiful colors---and avoids the beauty of shadows which show the marvelousness of relief in a flat object, has no understanding of the real glory of art as it is perceived by the most noble minds.
What is beautiful is not always good.  I say this to those painters who love the beauty of color so much that they intentionally paint only weak, barely perceptible shadows, insisting that this is the right way to paint.
Shadow is a more powerful force than light for it can entirely deprive objects of light, whereas light can never chase away all the shadows of objectd because these objects are solid."

Current News

Rochester Art Supply - May 1

Rochester Art Supply will be set up in the conference room of the Best Western Plus this coming Sunday from 9am until 2pm.  Right at 2pm, President Belser will bring our quarterly meeting to order in the breakfast area situated in the lobby.  This allows us to have the meeting on time and for Mike to pack up his pastels and other supplies for the journey back to Rochester.

Mike continues his generous streak by donating another 120 set of Sennelier half-sticks to the CPPS.  Would you like to win this set?  For every $50 spent for supplies, you will receive one ticket.  ($100=2 tickets, etc.)  Virginia will draw the winning ticket at the beginning of the meeting.  Oh, by the way, you must be present to win!

Mike didn't make the trip to State College last year as the sales were down considerably from past years.  Let's make sure that he continues to visit us by supporting this great opportunity in a big way!.

Meet your Members

Jill Foster, Newsletter Editor, Resource Officer, Past-President, CPPS Founder

After retiring, Jill began taking art classes at the Art Alliance.  It was there she discovered the joy of painting with soft pastels.   She enjoys using the soft pastels for both studio and plein air painting.

Because of her enthusiasm for soft pastels, Jill founded the Central Pennsylvania Pastel Society in 2004 with the purpose of bringing together other pastelists in the area who also enjoyed working with this medium.  It was hoped that as a group there would be sharing of ideas and techniques along with sponsoring major workshops, shows, and developing community awareness about soft pastels.

In 2005,  the CPPS also became a member of the International Association of Pastel Societies. Even though IAPS is basically an organization of pastel societies, this affiliation gives individual members of CPPS access to the international art community.

Artist Statement:  Painting with soft pastels has brought new meaning to my life.  Every day begins with the pleasure of working with the brilliant array of colors and that brings me great happiness.
