Letter from the Editor

For your convenience and possible future painting plans, the webmaster and I have put together a yearly schedule for changing the slide show on the CPPS website.

November/December - Holiday Themes
January/February - Snow and Winter Scenes
March/April - People/Places
May/June - Spring/Floral Themes
July/August -Favorite Subjects
September/October - Autumn Themes

All themes can incorporate landscape, still life, abstract, portraiture, figurative, etc.  Whatever you envision.  Just send your work to acraneart@gmail.com with "slideshow" typed in the subject line.  Be sure that your jpegs are at least 600-800 pixels in height.  Thank you.
****************
Remember that 2016 dues can be paid at the November meeting.  The dues are $30/yr

This newsletter program sends me a report on the % of people who have opened the newsletter.  The first newsletter sent out in March was opened by 92% of the artists in our group and then in August, the percentage dropped, with only 57% of you opening your newsletter.  Last month we recorded 78% opens.  Why am I sharing this information with you?  Because only you can make the newsletter viable for our organization.  You do that by contributing and by enjoying the newsletter when it comes in your email.  If you don't contribute to it, and if you delete it, spam it, or not open it, you are sending the message that you are no longer interested in having a monthly newsletter.  It's your decision.

Paint Out Summary

Six people attended Paint Out West and one attended Fisherman's Paradise.  It was a beautiful day for painting and was enjoyed by all those present.

Good Spirits Paint-Around

On September 13, four members of the Central Pennsylvania Pastel Society performed a pastel paint-around in support of the Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania’s Good Spirits fundraiser at Seven Mountains Wine Cellars.  Jennifer Shuey, Kim Gates Flick, Virginia Belser, and Roxanne Naydan each started a painting for 20 minutes, then rotated around to each other’s' paintings for another 15 minutes each, and then finished up on the painting that they started. Collaboration at its best!  And the guests were intrigued.

The four paintings were donated to the Art Alliance for a door prize and three silent auction offerings.  You can see the four paintings on the CPPS Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/208852979229191/

The Education Committee Wants You!

Do your unique ideas for CPPS keep you up at night?

Are you looking for a meaningful way to contribute to CPPS?

Do you want to work closely in a small collaborative group?

Have you not yet participated behind the scenes with CPPS?

If so, then please consider joining the newly formed Education Committee.  This 3 member committee is charged with conceiving, planning for and delivering the bulk of CPPS educational and outreach activities. Each year, one member rotates off and a new member rotates in. This cycle allows each incoming member to "learn the ropes" from the other two ongoing members.

If you have questions, please contact any of the current committee members listed below.  click here for the updated proposal:

Upcoming WatercolorPastel Workshop
October 17, 2015

This is the first of local workshops organized by the CPPS Education Committee.  The workshop will take place on October 17 at the Friend's Meeting House, 611 Prospect Ave., (not the school by Foxdale) in State College from 9:30-4.  The registration is $50 and that includes all materials.  So, the only things you need to bring are yourself, your lunch and your enthusiasm!  (You need to bring your portable easel, pastels, and a photo for the PM session.)

The morning features Brienne Brown, a local watercolorist, showing how to use a limited watercolor palette to create strong values for an underpainting over which we will apply pastel.  In the afternoon, Anne Kenyon will continue our journey using watercolor for an underpainting on sanded paper in preparation for the final layers of soft pastel.

This promises to be a fun and exciting day.  Sign up soon as registration closes after 10/10/15!  If there aren't 6 or more people signed up with fee paid by then, the workshop will be cancelled.  Click Here for registration form.

Diary notes of Marianne Fyda,  CPPS President
from the PSA show in New York City

It was an honor and a  thrill to have a painting in the Pastel Society of America (PSA)
“Enduring Brilliance 2015” Exhibition at the National Arts Club (NAC) in NYC.
Just visiting the NAC is neat because it’s located in an amazing Victorian mansion,
and it’s also full of vintage art and a great variety of today's pastel painting legends,
(as well as those of us who would like to be).
No prize this time, just the joy of having my painting in the show!

Thursday, September 17, 2015

We, (my husband, Gene, and I), arrived in NYC via our car on I-80, to the NJ Transit Train from Denville NJ to Penn Station and the rest of the way on subway. (Not exactly what we are used to!).  We checked into our hotel and visited our family, Paul, Marcy and Henry.

Friday, Sept 18, 2015

We enjoyed the John Singer Sargent Show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Friday am.

Went to the PSA Gallery Talk with Richard McKinley at the NAC Friday pm.
(We were joined there by our family.  What a treat! )
Richard talked about as many of the 180+ paintings as possible in less than 1 hour.  “WOW!"

Saturday, Sept 19, 2015 AM

We went to the PSA “Candy Store” of art supplies,  (Talked with Mike from Rochester!)  I took advantage of the free portfolio review offered to Associate Members of the PSA.  Maceo Mitchell gave me a delightful 20 minutes of encouragement , MOST HELPFUL!

I also got a chance to meet Duane Wakeham, who is a master pastelist and author of
A Guide to Drawing, we had a great discussion on the importance of drawing and learning the basics. GREAT CONVERSATION!
In the PM. we  babysat for Henry, so Paul and Marcy could enjoy some free time.

Sunday, September 20,

We spent the day in Central Park with family, and attended the dinner and met more artists.

Maria Marino who attended our CPPS Terri Ford Workshop sends her regards,
Maria is a PSA signature member and member of the PSA Board of Governors.

I have lots of photos to share, and I had lots of fun.

Meet your Members

Jeanne McKinney, Artist

Jeanne Black McKinney was born in Buffalo, New York. She graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Art. She also studied at the Moore College of Art in Philadelphia and with private teachers, in classes and workshops.

Jeanne’s earliest artistic influence came from her Grandfather, the Baltimore artist, Edward S. Black. She grew up surrounded by his beautiful paintings and fondly remembers him making drawings for her and her brothers when they were very young.
After raising her five children, Jeanne has returned to painting. Her work reflects her intense interest and appreciation in the natural world as she paints plein air landscapes and organic still lifes. Painting outdoors seems natural to her as she also enjoys hiking and flyfishing in Central Pennsylvania and beyond.

Jeanne’s professional affiliations include Juried Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America, Associate Member of American Women Artists, Signature membership in the Central Pennsylvania Pastel Society, and memberships in the Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania, the Art Association of Harrisburg, Art in Common of Centre County, the Artist Registry of the Bellefonte Museum for Centre County, the Pastel Society of New Hampshire, the Degas Pastel Society and the International Association of Pastel Societies.

Jeanne has studied in painting workshops with Richard McKinley PSA, Robert Carsten PSA, Maggie Price PSA, Elizabeth Apgar Smith PSA, Susan Ogilvie PSA, Master Pastelist Judith B. Carducci PSA, Terri Ford PSA, and Kim Lordier PSA.
Jeanne exhibits her paintings in juried national and regional exhibitions. Her work can be found at The State College Framing Company and Gallery in State College, PA, Faustina’s Gallery in Lewisburg, PA, The Green Drake Gallery and Arts Center in Millheim, PA, in private and corporate collections, and on her website:  www.jeannemckinney.com

“I feel blessed to live in such a beautiful area, surrounded by mountains to explore, streams and rivers to fish, and an abundant source of inspiring landscape to paint. I hope to interpret in my work, for others, that which moves me when I view the land.”
