Letter from the Editor

Remember to pay your dues at the November 8th meeting and definitely before December 31, 2015. Dues are currently $30.  Make your checks out to "CPPS".  (Give your dues to Anne Kenyon at the meeting as Susan won't be there.)  If you can't attend the meeting, mail your checks to: CPPS,  P.O. Box 246, Lemont, PA, 16851.

The slideshow theme on the website for November/December is Holidays.  So if you have any paintings depicting holidays from November through December, please send them to Anna now and indicate "slideshow" in the subject line.  The theme for Jan/Feb is Snow/Winter.  Be sure that your jpegs are at least 600-800 pixels in height.

I have received many comments telling me how much people enjoy reading the "bios" of members.   That being so, if you haven't already submitted your "bio", please send me one soon.  I have one "bio" left for the December newsletter and if the column is to continue, I will need more right away.

Reminder: News deadline is the last Saturday of the month.  That deadline gives me Sunday to finish up details on the newsletter before it is ready to be sent out on Monday.

Request from Education Committee

The committee would like members to consider donating unused  pastels, pastel papers, easels, storage boxes, etc. These materials would then be available for members to use when giving public demonstrations, pre-meeting activities and other hands-on events we hold.

For your convenience, you may bring your donations to the November 8th meeting and give them to Virginia Belser, Anne Kenyon or Kathleen Muffie-Witt.  Please have the materials in a box or bag for ease of carrying and storing.

Thank you, Candace, for the nice selection of pastels you donated!

Request for Audit Volunteers

Marianne Fyda needs two volunteers for our annual audit of the books.  If you can help with this, please email Marianne.

WatercolorPastel Workshop Wrap up

Six people attended the recent workshop "Watercolor and Pastel" sponsored and organized by the CPPS education committee and featuring award winning watercolor artist Brienne Brown.  Brienne, who recently won an award at the "Easels in Frederick" Plein Air event and is featured in an article in November's Plein Air magazine, conducted a paint along for the participants.  Brienne emphasized the importance of values and the use of colorful greys in creating a believable painting.  She demonstrated how to control the amount of pigment and water to achieve the desired effect. Learning to judge the pigment to water ratio from thin, runny "tea" to thick "butter" allows for the value range and control evident in her paintings.  Brienne was a dynamic teacher and offered much useful information on painting, applicable across media.

After lunch, Anne Kenyon demonstrated using watercolor as an underpainting on Art Spectrum Supertooth paper and discussed the possibilities of adding pastel to the watercolors created in the morning. Participants worked on their paintings in the time remaining and hopefully left the workshop with new skills and possibilities for future paintings.

Meet your Members

Virginia Belser, President-elect

Virginia Belser has engaged with art ever since she can remember…. from Saturday classes at the local university to having her own cubby in 3rd grade for storing her art. High school experiences included first forays in life drawing and learning the medium of oil paint.

Majoring in watercolors in college, Virginia’s senior thesis focused on the tension created by trying to describe vast space while using a minimum of painterly details.

She first discovered the medium of pastels in the mid 1990’s. After a painting hiatus while she focused on raising her sons, she returned to pastels in the mid 2000’s.  During those years, as her young boys were still a priority, her painting time occurred mostly on vacations or during intensive workshops. A two year stint in coastal North Carolina provided Virginia with a great deal of engaging landscape challenges.

Virginia is a member of the Central Pennsylvania Pastel Society, the Pastel Society of North Carolina and the Wilmington Art Association.
She has shown and sold her work in several juried exhibits in both the central Pennsylvania area and the southeastern coastal North Carolina including:
