Below is part of a message from Jo Pankridge, the National Shadow Judging Coordinator.

The young voices gained a sense of agency, they felt heard, and they acquired important literary critique language while increasing their reading repertoire. We also heard that the program had wider effects in their community as the participants used their voices to speak out to others and offer new perspectives on the books they read. The 2022 Shadow Judges became advocates for reading for pleasure.

In 2022 our program was seeded by a federal RISE grant. In 2023 the program’s success is in our hands. We thank you sincerely for your support and motivation to grow our impact. As members of your local CBCA branch you may hear of different state-based branch support.

We are confident the website we have created with available funding, offers you quality support in a variety of resources. You will also be offered a mentor from your local CBCA Branch.

Your groups can contribute to the website’s success in the submission of your inspired creative responses. These will be viewed widely. Ultimately, it is the process of reading, discussing and voting that enriches the lives of our young readers.
