President’s Report February 2022

Hello everyone,

Hopefully most of you are getting on board with Hello Club, our new membership site. It is where you can renew your membership, find information about upcoming events and register for them.

Our first event for the year is our celebration of the release of the Notables List. The National office invited Australian authors and illustrators to send a photo of themselves incorporating the number 2 in the lead up to the Notables List being released on 22/2/22. There is a series of videos in alphabetical order of those who participated. Our Branch congratulates Cate Whittle, Stephanie Owen Reeder and Maura Pierlot for being included in the initiative. You can find the videos easily if you Google CBCA National. In an amazing coincidence, Maura was handed a 22 as her table order number today at our celebration!!!

To recognise Library Lover’s Day on 14 February, Committee members met at the Bookplate Café at the National Library for a chat about all things books. Our National Judge for the Younger Reader’s Category, Colleen Caddey, who has been busy in the final deliberations prior to the release of the Notables List, assured us that the deliberations had been collegial and thought provoking. Maura Pierlot shared the Book Bench project which is a fabulous idea. Look out for children’s and adult’s books appearing all over Canberra on park/playground/shopping place benches in zip lock bags for you to take home to read and then return to the same place or somewhere different for someone else to read.

Something that I had been mulling over for a while has also come to fruition this year. I am aiming to take photos of the front cover of every novel I read throughout the year. It will be so helpful when someone asks “What have you read lately?” or “Have you read…..?”. I will put a few children’s book covers there too, so that I have a record of standout ones.

Happy reading everyone,

Julie Long
CBCA ACT Branch President

Overview: The competing pressures of home, study, sport, screen time and socializing is a balancing act for young children, tweens and teens. The Book Bench Project

Have you found a book on a park bench?  One of our members found one and thought it was a wonderful idea. She shared the idea with us at the Library Lovers Day morning tea.  If you want to take part, all you need to do is print out the letter, put it in a bag with a book and leave it somewhere. When you find one, take a picture and post it somewhere with the hashtag #thebookbenchproject
