President’s Report March 2022

Hello everyone,

The Night of the Notables was notable as our first event held using Hello Club for the registration and payment process. There was a good turn up of 30 people and 8 apologies. The online announcement was preceded by videos of the authors and illustrators who had featured themselves with a representation of 2 in recognition of the announcement date 0f 22/2/22. Cate Whittle, Stephanie Reeder and Maura Pierlot ably represented our Branch. After the Announcement, ACT Judge for the books for Younger Readers, Colleen Caddey, gave an overview of each Notable book from her category. Attendees were welcome to look at the books at the end of her presentation and many were prompted by this opportunity to purchase copies. The Book Cow once again proved to be a perfect venue and thank you to Peter and Sarah for helping to make things go smoothly.

A long serving member of our Branch was recognised with an Order of Australia in the Australia Day Awards. Lynn Fletcher received her OAM for “Service to the Arts, through Children’s Literature. Lynn has been a great supporter of our Branch for decades and is a linchpin of NCACL. Congratulations Lynn.

Rachael Hind is our representative on the Sun project, the 2022 Junior Judging initiative on a National level. There has been one meeting so far and more details will be released soon. There will be 10 schools/reading groups from our Branch who will be involved.

Justine Power is our representative on the National Merchandise Sub Committee to review the merchandise sales procedure. The e-store will be live soon. The Brisbane floods have slowed this process down because of communication difficulties.

The announcement of the new Australian Children’s Laureate was conducted online from Melbourne. The new Laureate is Gabrielle Wang. The online presentation included lion dancing and an interactive dragon illustrating workshop. It was an engaging format. She has already posted activities for schools on the Australian Children’s Laureate website.

Writing and selecting photos for our Branch Annual Report has taken time and great effort, but it will all be ready prior to the AGM. We will be using Hello Club again as the registration and payment point. We hope to see many of you there. More details further in the enews.

Happy reading,

Julie Long
