President’s Report February 2023

Hello everyone,

I hope you all found time to celebrate Library Lovers' Day on 14 February. The 6 of us who met at Bookplate at the National Library certainly had a great time. We each had a children’s book hidden/wrapped up and gave out clues for the others to guess the book. It was an enjoyable challenge and we eventually guessed each one. There was a variety of Picture Books, Younger Readers novels and Older Readers Books. I am personally looking forward to doing this again.

Hopefully more of us will catch up at the Notables evening on Tuesday 28 February at the Book Cow. This is always a celebratory evening as we learn which of the books we have admired/purchased over the preceding year appear on the list. We have a few locals to cheer for too. If there are any of you out there that would like to car pool for our events, particularly at night time (for any reason) could you let me know? We have people who travel from all parts of the Northside and Southside to get to our events and most are willing to help out others who may prefer not to drive. I am happy to pair people up but we can only do this if people let us know. It just takes a quick phone call a few days prior to the event – 0414710790 so that it can be sorted.

We have been invited to participate in the ACT Playgroups Association 50th Birthday celebration on Thursday 23 March 10.00am-1.00pm at Kambah Adventure Playground. We plan to have an information stall, free books to give away and someone to read stories from time to time. Ring me 0414710790 if you are able to help on the day.

Happy reading,

Julie Long
CBCA ACT Branch President

We had a lovely day on Tuesday at Bookplate at the NLA.  Everyone bought a wrapped book with clues to see if we could guess their favourite book.

After the last visit was postponed due to health restrictions, Matt promised he would come back.  We now have a date!  Please note this is recommended for students 15+.

When:Saturday 4 March 2023, 2:00 – 4:00pm
Where:  National Portrait Gallery
Cost: $7 / Circle of Friends and students $5  (Join the Circle of Friends to take advantage of cheaper ticket prices and a range of other goodies).

Go to the National Portrait Gallery to see award-winning artist, writer, composer and musician Matt Ottley for a screening of his latest work, The Tree of Ecstasy and Unbearable Sadness – a sensory insight into the experiences of those with mental illness. This will be followed by an intimate conversation with Matt, and chance for you to ask him questions.

Matt Ottley is an acclaimed and multiple award-winning multi-modal artist, working equally across the fields of literature, visual arts and music. His 2021 picture book, How to make a bird (with Meg McKinlay), was the winner of the CBCA’s Picture Book of the Year Award and joint winner of the Prime Minister’s Award for Children’s Literature. As a composer, and anYamaha endorsed musician, Matt has written scores for many of his picture books, which have been performed by orchestras and musicians across Australia and internationally as part of his Sound of Picture Books initiative.

His newly released picture book for adults and young adults, The Tree of Ecstasy and Unbearable Sadness, is inspired by Matt’s personal experience of bipolar disorder.
