We are seeking expressions of interest from groups of young individuals who will read > listen > discuss > reflect + respond collaboratively to our 2022 Book of the Year Awards Shortlist.
The CBCA Shadow Judging program is an exciting addition to our annual calendar. We are inviting young voices from across Australia to join the conversation about the books on our CBCA Book of the Year Shortlist. At the end of CBCA Book Week, at our Shadower’s Choice Awards, winners chosen by our young groups of judges will be announced.
The Program in 2022
All groups, once registered, will have access to the Shadow Judging website where resources will be available, your groups’ creative responses can be shared, and voting can happen!
All participating groups of young people, our ‘Shadow Judges’, will:
  • Read the 6 Shortlisted books in their nominated category from 2022 CBCA Book of the Year Awards (BOYA)
  • Discuss these titles with their peers considering the CBCA Book of the Year Awards criteria,
  • Share a creative response, and
  • Vote for their winner and 2 honour books.
The Shadowers’ Choice Awards will be announced and celebrated at a brand-new event at the end of CBCA Book Week 2022 on August 26.
The Shadow Judging video developed to support the Victorian CBCA trial in 2021 outlines the project, now coming to you around Australia:

Are You Keen To Participate In
The Shadow Judging Project In 2022?

Please follow the process and timelines for the CBCA ACT Branch that follow.
Before you register :
  1.  Confirm that you have a suitable  adult to be your groups’ facilitator.  They will register your group, manage administration, and facilitate your discussion.
  2. Your organisation OR facilitator is a member of their state branch of the CBCA (so they can be linked with a CBCA Mentor to assist with the project). Click here to get CBCA ACT Membership.
  • ACT groups need to be current financial school or institutional members. If you are an individual member your membership will be updated and transferred to school membership for insurance purposes for 2022.
ACT Branch will cover the $50 registration fee for all successful applications.
To Register:
Please read  all the information provided and then complete the application and questions here:
Successful applications will be notified on 26 April. All groups once registered will have access to the Shadow Judging website where resources will be available, your groups’ creative responses can be shared, and voting can happen!
Any school or community-based organisation can apply to participate.
Your group can be self-funded, or for those in need, the ACT CBCA Branch has funding to support 10 reading groups, drawn from young people from diverse ethnic backgrounds and inclusive of all gender and ability.

Each funded group will be supported with:
  • One set of books from your nominated shortlisted category.   CBCA ACT will organise and supply the books to your group.
  • A $600 voucher to support a writer and/or illustrator workshop with your group.  CBCA ACT will help facilitate this for you.
All groups will have access to special supporting resources.
The ACT Committee will be selecting groups to be funded based on the following criteria:
  1. Order of applications received
  2. Length of CBCA membership
  3. The group’s ability to access the books
  4. The group’s  access to a teacher, teacher-librarian, or librarian as a facilitator
The  group facilitator guides the discussion around the CBCA Book of the Year Awards criteria (shadowing) thus enabling our young voices to form their own choice of winners, while the CBCA judges work through the same process.

If you would like  further information, please contact our State Coordinator Rachael Hind.
We thank the Australian Government RISE Fund (Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand) and our Supporters for providing the opportunity to build our program, website, and resources and to provide support funding for 115 reading groups from a range of areas across Australia including early childhood centres, schools, home schools, public libraries and community groups.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How many participants can you have in a group?
A: Any number up to a class size. In the trials there were groups from 3 to 25 participants.
Q: What does the facilitator do?
A: Each group needs an adult:
• to form the group and manage the administration aspects of running the program,
• to provide a welcoming and supportive environment which is respectful of all,
• to assist the discussion of each book using the CBCA BOYA criteria, and
• to inspire and manage the creative response.
Q: What resources do self-funded groups get?
A: All groups will have a supporting mentor and be given access to all the digital resources on the Shadow Judging website. Self-funded groups will need to purchase copies of the 6 Shortlisted books in their category of choice. They also need to fund a creator’s workshop for their group if they wish.
Q: Why do groups have to pay a $50 registration fee?
A: The ACT Committee has chosen to take the registration out of 2022 school/institutional membership fees and will pay CBCA National on groups behalf. The registration fee contributes to the administration and development of the program and resources. Further, it demonstrates a commitment on behalf of the group to complete the project and enables groups to be matched to a mentor.
Q: How many groups will there be in the ACT and surrounds?
A: ACT Committee has undertaken to have a maximum of 20 groups, 10 of these groups will be funded groups.
Q: How do I form and manage a group.
A: A facilitator needs to gather a group of interested young people together who will enjoy discussing and responding to contemporary children’s books, arrange regular meeting times, facilitate the discussion, and submit the creative response to each Shortlisted title in their chosen category.
