President’s Report November 2022
Hello everyone,
We did it!!! Another successful Reader’s Cup was held, this year face to face, at Radford College on Wednesday 19 October from 5pm till 8pm. Twelve schools competed with a total of 22 teams of Year 5 and 6 students.
The 5 titles the students read were:
- The World Between Blinks by Amie Kaufman
- Fly on the Wall by Remy Lai
- Aster’s Good Right Things by Kate Gordon
- The Little Wave by Pip Henry
- We Are Wolves by Katrina Nanested
The Branch successfully applied for an ACT Children’s Week Grant and was given $300 towards costs of medals, Cup engraving and prizes. Once again Rachael Hind did an awesome job coordinating the event. Thanks this year to Justine Power who helped me put the questions together and to Sally Judd who ably assisted Justine and myself with the judging. It was a busy time on the night!!!!
The other initiative we have started work on is the annual Christmas book appeal where new books are donated to Women’s refuges, hospitals, and other charities that interact with disadvantages children over the festive season.
The National Board strategic meeting was held in Melbourne 4-6 November in Melbourne. All Board members and Branch Presidents were invited. Myself and Kirrin Sampson represented the ACT. The deliberations resulted in a new Purpose statement, Mission, Vision and Core Values.
The Branch Christmas get together is coming up in early December. Details further in this enews. Join in the festive spirit and wear something celebratory.
Happy reading, happy holiday season, stay safe,
Julie Long
CBCA ACT Branch President

Would you like to be a Book Week Judge?
It is with great pleasure that we share with you that the applications for the 2023 – 2025 Book of the Year Judge are now open.
We would love you to submit an applications to be considered for the next term 2023-25. We are looking for 15 new judges, 3 for each category with the exception of the Picture Book and New Illustration panel. You can apply even if you are not a member, but you will have to become a member of CBCA.

Each Branch will receive the applications in their State or Territory and compile a shortlist, which the State or Territory Branch returns to the Awards Administrator who will forward the shortlists to the Awards Convenor and Awards Committee for final selection. The appointment of judges is endorsed at the next National Board meeting following the selection process.
It is for 2 ‘Awards years’. You will start receiving books in March/April 2023, that you will read and award for 2024. Then you will receive the new batch in March/April 2024 that you will read and award for 2025.
Please find below, the documents correspondent with the application. You will need to include a Curriculum Vitae. For more information visit the website or reach out to the Awards Committee at awards@cbca.org.au

Congratulations Peter Arnaudo
Children's Week Award Recipient
Since opening in early December 2020 independent bookshop The Book Cow has actively supported local schools, preschools, playgroups, childcare centres, authors, illustrators and professional organisations involved in literature and literacy throughout Canberra. The owner, Peter Arnaudo is passionate and knowledgeable about books for children and young adults. He has set up a weekly Tuesday morning storytime for babies and toddlers which is held on the grass at Green Square in good weather or inside the shop in cooler times. He has hosted numerous book launches for Canberra book creators which are live streamed for those who cannot attend face to face. He has also set up a regular after school hours Chat session for teachers, librarians and educators to catch up on the latest children and young adult books and trends, with guest speakers. He produces a monthly newsletter highlighting new releases and a seasonal reading catalogue. He actively supports local book organisations by encouraging them to have events in the shop and works hard to liaise with them to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Peter's commitment to young readers and their adults is outstanding and well deserving of recognition with an ACT Children's Week Award.

It was wonderful to do our first ‘in-person’ Readers Cup event in 2022, after two years of remote competitions. 22 teams from 10 schools participated this year in a very close competition.
The books the teams read were:

Winning teams:
1st place: Hughes Team 1
2nd place: Hughes Team 2
3rd place: Canberra Grammar School Team 1

Thank you to our wonderful judges: Justine Power, Julie Long and Sally Judd.
A big thank you to Gemma Wilson from Radford College for hosting us on the night, as well as Veronica Melville and Terri Robb for their extra support.
We were also lucky recipients of an ACT Children’s Week grant which helps us fund the trophy, medals and a sweet treat on the night for the students.
We were delighted to have Book Passion Belconnen run a book stall on the evening of Readers Cup and it looked like many happy students were able to purchase books. What a treat!
