Now, More than Ever

On November 10, AAUW National shared this powerful Tweet: "If this election has taught us anything, it’s that AAUW values & voices are needed now more than ever."

After this hyperpartisan election year, AAUW’s nonpartisan leadership and research-based advocacy is needed now more than ever.

Join AAUW Murfreesboro as we continue our track record of working with both sides of the aisle in a collaborative and productive way. Imagine the impact of intelligent women advocating for and talking about change with elected officials and in their communities.

The 2016 election brought us advances in women's representation in government. Senators-elect Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), and Kamala Harris (D-CA) made history by becoming the first Thai American, first Latina, and first biracial woman, respectively, to serve in the U.S. Senate. This means that the number of Women of Color serving in the U.S. Senate will quadruple in 2017: from only one, to four. Altogether, 21 women will serve in the U.S. Senate in 2017, more than ever before in our nation's history.

20 years of sparking curiosity at Expanding Your Horizons

MTSU held its 20th Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Conference for middle and high school girls on Saturday, October 22, 2016. One hundred seventy-four middle school girls and 79 high school girls attended a day of speakers and hands-on workshops. The keynote speaker was former astronaut Dr. Rhea Seddon, who also spoke at the very first EYH conference.

The girls attended hands-on workshops that were conducted by STEM role models, both from higher education and from industry. The workshop leaders spoke briefly about their careers and what the girls should do to prepare for these careers. The leaders then lead the girls in hands-on activities related to fields such as chemistry, engineering, computer science, biology, and mathematics.
On Friday, October 21, MTSU hosted a 20th anniversary celebration to recognize the partners and supporters of the EYH conference—including AAUW Murfreesboro! Dr. Judith Iriarte-Gross, AAUW Murfreesboro branch member, was given spe-
cial recognition for her 20 years of leadership as Director of the MTSU EYH Program. Dr. Myra Norman, STEM Chair for AAUW Murfreesboro, presented Dr. Iriarte-Gross with a quilt made of the EYH T-shirts given to the girls over the last 20 years on behalf of the EYH planning committee.
AAUW Murfreesboro congratulates MTSU EYH for 20 successful years of inspiring girls in STEM fields!
We are pleased to annouce AAUW Murfreesboro's nominee for the 2017 Rutherford ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award, Alicja Lanfear! Alicja is an instructor of biology at MTSU as well as the Vice President for Membership of the Murfreesboro Branch. Alicja's talents and passion for encouraging girls in STEM fields makes Alicja an asset to our community.
Plan to come out to the 2017 Rutherford ATHENA Awards ceremony in April to support Alicja and the branch!
Don't forget! We are still accepting nominations for the AAUW of Tennessee scholarship to the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders. For more information about the conference and how to nominate an outstanding student, click here to visit our website. Nominations will be accepted until January 9, 2017.
