Leveling the Playing Field for Women and Girls in Middle Tennessee Since 1913      February 2016
Got tickets?

There's still time to purchase your tickets here to Songs for Scholarships, an evening of music by singer/songwriter Don Henry. Proceeds benefit the Ruth Houston Memorial Scholarship Fund of AAUW Murfreesboro. We'll see you there Thursday night!

Advance Rutherford has launched!

Advance Rutherford is a shared table of programs and organizations serving women and girls in Rutherford County. Its goal is to foster, promote and support growth opportunities in education, at work, and in the community.

Advance Rutherford grew from an objective in AAUW Murfreesboro's 2014 Strategic Plan. AAUW Murfreesboro is excited to be an anchor organization in making Advance Rutherford happen, and we look forward to collaborating with all of our Advance Rutherford partners moving forward!

Branch members from across the state say "hi" from the 2015 AAUW-TN convention.
Dear AAUW members,

According to the report The Status of Women in TN, released last year by the Institute of Women’s Policy Research, Tennessee ranks 38th nationally in women’s political participation. Why are our numbers so low? One reason is that a low percentage of women in our state get out to vote.

2016 is a presidential election year, and AAUW branches across the state have much to gain from supporting voter registration efforts. Our branches can be a resource for “women to women” voter turnout. Talk to your friends, neighbors and communities—get them to the polls in support of equity for women and girls in Tennessee!

Please join us for a brief “webinar” on Voter Registration tips and best practices. Peggy Swann of the Murfreesboro Branch will host this online workshop to help your branch “Get Out the Vote” on Monday, February 29, at 8 p.m. EST/7 p.m. CST. Click here to register for the webinar.

Yours in Voter Outreach,
Dia Cirillo, AAUW-TN Public Policy Chair
Rachel Forlines, Assistant to Public Policy Chair

The branch is pleased to announce that we have nominated Nathaly Campo for the AAUW of Tennessee Scholarship to attend the National Conference of College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL). This two-day conference will take place at the University of Maryland, giving college women workshops and guidance on how to map their futures. Nathaly currently studies the Anthropology of Religion at MTSU and is aiming to pursue a PhD in the subject. She works in the archaeology lab and was recently appointed the Religious Studies tutor, an honor that is only given to one student. If awarded by AAUW-TN, Nathaly will have the registration fee covered. The branch has committed travel funds for Nathaly.

What matters to the branch?

This month we have seen two new initiatives go live: Songs for Scholarships and Advance Rutherford (AR). Two years ago during the branch’s first strategic planning session, members prioritized these initiatives, in addition to others, specifying a need for a new fundraising event to replace the book sale and the need for a women’s council in the county. These initiatives have taken off thanks to the leadership of branch members, Laura Bartel and Peggy Paulson on Songs and Ayne Cantrell on AR, along with the contributions of many other branch members.

On March 20, the board and some branch members will convene at MTSU to identify the branch priorities for the next two years. If you would like to participate in the planning session, please contact Dia Cirillo, president, at aauwboropresident@gmail.com.

Keep an eye on the branch Facebook page and on your inbox! We will be asking for member input through surveys and focus groups over the next few weeks. And as always, if you have ideas or feedback, please share them with Dia Cirillo.
