Student Story
Generational Learning at LVGH
Reyna moved to the U.S. from Honduras six years ago. Her sister-in-law found out about LVGH through the community and recommended that Reyna join her here. Reyna was hesitant at first because she has to look after her two-year-old daughter, Reiven. She tagged along with her sister-in-law at the start of this year and discovered that she’d be able enroll Reiven in LVGH’s childcare program. Reyna is now enrolled in our Basic English class and brings her daughter with her every week to read and play in the nearby childcare room while she attends class.

Reyna says the program has already helped her to feel much more comfortable in the U.S. “I want to learn English so I can have more opportunities in this country,” Reyna tells us. “It’s a necessary program that teaches you a necessary language. I was a little lost before and I didn’t understand people, but now I’m not too shy to respond and talk to them.” We can’t wait to continue to watch both Reyna and Reiven’s progress!

Community Event
Thanks For Attending Our Career and Resource Fair!

Although community events have been on pause for quite a while, LVGH's Career and Resource Fair on July 21st was a big success. We hosted three local partners who were there to help our students with a variety of services. Griffin Health administered COVID vaccines, FedEx Ground offered information about full and part-time job opportunities, and Comcast helped eligible students sign up for free or reduced internet service. The COVID clinic proved especially popular, as several students, tutors, and even staff received a second dose or booster. We're very excited about the turnout and look forward to hosting more helpful events in the fall!

Become a Monthly Donor

Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford has launched a brand new Monthly Giving page on our website! The dependability of a monthly donation truly helps us to help our students more than our donors know, and we wanted to help shed some light on that.

From a five dollar monthly donation that buys school supplies for one class, through a fifty dollar monthly donation that purchases one laptop at the end of the year, we did some math and mapped out these examples to show you just how far your contribution can go.

Check out our new page and learn more about becoming a monthly donor at:
