IBSOM Fall 2021 Update

IBSOM Fall 2021 Update

Hello IB Schools of Michigan!

We are looking forward to our year ahead and wishing that your transition to school in the fall finds everyone healthy and hopeful for a year that reunites the adults, students, and families in your school communities.

We want to share our Top Five topics for you to think about and look forward to connecting with you at one or more of our upcoming fall events!

#1: IBSOM Coordinator Meetings

Throughout our state, the IBSOM Coordinator meetings have reliably been a support to development in both our new and established IB schools. They have also been a time when our IB leaders in the state can collectively engage with our IB Relationship Manager. Due to the nature of continued Covid restrictions at many of our schools, including restrictions on visitors, we are going to continue our IBSOM Coordinator meetings via Zoom for the time being. We will be moving the meetings back to within the school day to allow for more of our IB Coordinators to engage within their work hours. Please plan to attend our first meeting on Tuesday September 14th from 1:00-2:30pm via Zoom. We will discuss alternating times moving forward as well as how to engage teachers in this collaboration.

Date: Tuesday September 14, 2021

Time: 1:00-2:30pm

Meeting ID: 899 3283 2387

Passcode: 761861

#2: Save the Date - IBSOM Fall Symposium

Please save the date of November 22, 2021 for our IBSOM Fall Symposium. We are hoping to hold this session face-to-face at Macomb ISD under required health protocols, but are prepared to adjust to a virtual platform if needed. Please plan for a face-to-face symposium at this time!

We will have one session: Approaches to Learning in the IB Continuum presented by Richard Hood.

This session will focus on the 'learning' component of the IB's Approaches to Teaching and Learning document. In an environment that fosters collegial sharing and growth, participants will explore research-based practices of an 'optimal learning environment, the alignment of classroom practice with the IB mission and Learner Profile, the techniques colleagues use to foster student engagement, gain a deeper understanding of the needs of adolescent learners and learning and will explore the balance of cognitive and social/emotional learning opportunities that promote student growth. The session will include guided inquiry, group work/investigation/presentation throughout.

Richard Hood, passionate facilitator of adult and student learning, has a special interest in shaping administrator and teacher commitment into intentional practices of learning and teaching. He has authored and led workshops for Literature, Language and literature and Approaches to teaching and learning in South Africa, USA, Turkey, Ireland, Thailand, Sweden and Mongolia. He is also an IB examiner, IB team leader and member of the Standardization and Grade Award Teams for Language and Literature HL Paper 2.

#3: Open IBSOM Board Position

Many of you have heard that one of IBSOM’s founding members, Jean Ramseyer, has decided to resign from her seat on the IBSOM Board. This creates an open board position that we will be looking to fill. If you are interested in service as an At Large member of the IBSOM Board with a focus on coordinating the IBSOM Coordinator Support Group, please complete the attached application before October 11th. If you have any questions about this position, please feel free to reach out to any IBSOM Board member.

#4: Honoring Jean Ramseyer’s legacy in IBSOM

We are in the planning phase of an annual award that recognizes excellence in IB teaching and learning in Jean’s honor. Please keep an eye out for details and nomination information throughout the fall. It is our hope that we continue her legacy of sharing ideas, triumphs, being a support to one another and to recognize those making the greatest impact for our students in our IB schools.

#5: Updates to IB Coordinator and Head of School contact list for 2021-2022

As we begin a new school year, we want to be sure that our communication and support reach the correct people in your schools. We understand that there is always movement of staff. Please help us by updating your IB School’s contact information.

Thank you for taking the time to read our fall updates. We are excited to connect with you in the coming months and please let us know how we can support your IB development. We wish you all a wonderful school year!
