Fort Worth Judo Open - Jan 18th

This is a great tournament for competitors and spectators as well. Last year there were competitors from Fort Worth Judo, Denton, Bulldog, Eastside, Campbell Green, Ichi Ni San, Okuri, Pan African, After School Judo, and Dallas International School. This year there will also be competitors from Yawara, Kokoro, Kama Jiu-Jitsu, Becerra Judo coached by Bert Becerra, in Garland, and USA Stars in Oklahoma led by Pat Burris, an Olympian and national coach. Judo thrives in the North Texas area, and there are several tournaments throughout the year in which national judoka come to compete. The Fort Worth Open tournament is a good warm-up for other upcoming judo tournaments in North Texas in February, including the Lone Star Tournament in Arlington and NTX Tournament at Eastside Dojo’s new facility in Plano. Most of the competitors will be juniors, many who are novice, yet there will also be several high level juniors competing. Parents who are interested in how a tournament works and the rules of judo are encouraged to come to the Fort Worth Open. Parents of young judoka are avid spectators at these family events, as they watch their children compete. Tournaments can be a learning experience in to the rules of judo, how to score, and how to avoid penalties. Even if a person does not win every match, the judoka can have the satisfaction of knowing they competed and gave it their best shot at the tournament. The coaches at the clubs in the north Texas region are good sportsman and have enough experience to help young and old judoka improve at the tournaments in the region. Adults have good opportunities to compete at the Fort Worth Open, with the Masters (30 - 60) and Seniors divisions competing and sometimes merging. The tournament organizers look at the ranks, weights, and skill to match up competitors to ensure good competition and safety.
