Interview with a Teacher

In this edition we interview American Teacher & Music Therapist Meagan Hughes.

So Meagan, what brought you to the Netherlands?

I came to the Netherlands to pursue work with the organization Musicians Without Borders, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the use of music as a tool for connecting communities that have been divided by war.

Since when you are teaching at Virtuosi?

I have been a teacher since 2014.

Tell us about one highlight from your career so far?

A highlight of my career so far was to meet Mickey Hart from the Grateful Dead, a supporter of the music therapy program, where I used to work at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in San Francisco, California.

Could you tell us one thing your students wouldn't know about you?

In addition to teaching piano, I also sing in a choir where the music is completely improvised!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Apart from music, I enjoy riding my bike and traveling

Can you tell us something about your work with 'Musician's Without Borders'?

This year, we have begun a program in the Netherlands called 'Welcome Notes' which is offering community music workshops in emergency reception centers for refugee children and families. As part of this program, we are offering a two day training for musicians, music teachers and music therapists who would like to apply their skills in this specific context. While we do not train musicians to become music therapists, who have their own specialized training program, we do offer basic training in 'psychological first aid' that will prepare participants to respond skillfully in a crisis situation.

More information on our program here: https://www.musicianswithoutborders.org/projects/welcome-notes/programs/

Finally, do you have a practice tip or advice for students?

Regular practice does pay off and there are a lot of ways to keep it interesting and fun! Try mixing it up by practicing only one hand and then the other, or playing with dynamics (soft/loud) or tempo (fast/slow).

To learn more about Meagan's work in the field of Music Therapy you can watch the PBS special 'The Healing Power of Music' below. Thank you Meagan.
