MARCH NEWS AND SOME DATES FOR THE DIARY
February might be a short month, but L'Atitude 51 was a hive of activity from
start to finish.
We were thrilled to receive the news that we made the prestigious McKenna's Guide Top
100 Restaurants for 2016! It came as a bit of shock to a small wine bar, but a very
pleasant one nonetheless!
Our Wine Fundamentals Level 1 Course finished up last month and we are delighted to
be able to run the Wine Fundamentals FollowOn Course, which started last Saturday.
We hope to rerun the Level 1 Course again before the summer, pending interest.
Chilean Wine Journalist, Francisca Jara, opened our eyes to the new wines of Chile in a
Chilean Wine Tasting – long gone are the massproduced, commercial wines that Chile
was once famous for, Francisca introduced us to some really fresh and exciting wines,
each one showing a remarkable elegance, like the lady herself! To top off a great
evening, she expertly paired them with a selection of delicious Chilean canapes. Check
out the highlights from the tasting in video format on our Facebook page.

February's CineCafe took us to the South of Spain with “Jerez & El Misterio del Palo
Cortado” (Sherry & The Mystery of Palo Cortado) with some really interesting sherries,
tastes and insights from the South of Spain, presented by Leslie Williams of the Irish
Examiner and sherry aficionado in his trademark entertaining way!
Our most memorable event of February has to have been the Riesling Tasting “In
Memory of Joe”. Despite the torrential rain and Tuesday billing, the upstairs bar was jam-
packed with people looking to honour Joe Karwig and the great work he did for the wine
community in Cork. Marcus Gates from Karwigs, aided by Jurgen (Joe's son) gave a
superb presentation and tasting of wines that Joe had initially selected himself for the
tasting last year. We gave the great man a good sendoff Germanstyle with a host of
different styles of Rieslings and some secret gems from the Karwig "hidden vaults"! And
collected a lot of money for charity in the process with all proceeds going to the Simon
Community, a charity chosen by Joe’s family.
And now everyone's favourite month is here with longer days to pack even more into! See
our event schedule below. Unfortunately, the Spanish Wine Tasting with Leslie Williams :
“Tastes of the Mediterranean” is sold out but we are taking names for the waiting list in
the event of cancellations, but as always we'd recommend getting in quick for any events
that take your fancy!
