A Message From Dr. Helen

For me, September feels like back-to-school, only better since it’s on my terms and there’s much less assigned homework that’s “due tomorrow.” As summer comes to an end and fall approaches, it feels like a good time to start new projects with the long-term view in mind. My fall 2019 projects include:

  • A redesigning of my website to allow users to browse 180+ blog articles by voice and have my articles read aloud, much like an audiobook or Audible
  • A second eBook geared toward a younger audience, who are just starting their careers
  • The launch of online, interactive, small-group coaching (and a special, discounted soft-launch rate)
I hope you enjoy this latest edition of "You Heard It Here!"

2019 has been an exciting year for Canada. We joined together as a nation in celebrating the Toronto Raptors’ historic NBA Championship win, and now Bianca Andreescu’s win at the US Open has us standing tall again. #WeTheNorth and #SheTheNorth indeed!

Both accomplishments make me think about what it takes to succeed in high stake situations at work -- even when we’re the underdog. When the stakes are high, why do some people stumble, while others rise up and shine?

There is no overstating the crucial role of resilience in achieving and maintaining success. “Building resilient careers and organizations” is my mission and my professional tagline. But when life events deplete our resilience, is there anything we can do to bounce back?

One question that clients often ask me is “How do I know when it’s time to leave a job in a toxic or unhealthy environment?” This is an especially difficult question when a job pays well and includes benefits. We can feel locked into certain jobs because of the ‘golden handcuffs.’ When do you know it’s time to take them off?

I’m excited to unveil a redesign of my website that allows Android users to browse 180+ blog articles by voice. It’s easy to use.  Just tap the microphone in the search bar and talk. As technology evolves, this feature will also work for Apple users. Since listening is the new reading, you can now choose to have the "AudioBlog" articles read out loud to you, just like an audiobook!

I’m pleased to announce the launch of small-group coaching to help address the types of issues that come up the most frequently. I’m able to offer this online, interactive coaching at a lower cost than private one-to-one coaching, making this a great way to find out if career coaching is for you. In fact, for a limited time, I will be offering a special, discounted soft-launch rate. Send me an email to find out more.

Dr. Ivan Misner and Dr. Adam Grant: "Givers Gain"

“Givers gain” is the mantra of Dr. Ivan Misner, founder of Business Network International (BNI). Before founding BNI Dr. Misner studied Psychology and Management, which is how I know this expression is not just a kumbaya, touchy-feely idea about generosity.

In this four minute video, one of my favourite Organizational Psychologists, Dr. Adam Grant shares counter-intuitive and fact-based ideas about how giving your time and assistance to help others succeed can make you and your organization more successful: watch the video. It's too bad so few leaders and business owners pay attention to the evidence that’s been generated by Work and Business Psychologists over the past 30 years. You heard it here first 😉

The Smart Playbook for Young Professionals

I’ve written a second eBook: The Smart Playbook for Young Professionals – How to Build a Successful Career. I wrote it so that my younger clients are not left out. The eBook that I shared in the July 2019 newsletter (Ready for the Big Leagues? How to Reach the Next Level in Your Career) was designed to help people who already have 10+ years of work behind them. Be sure to share the link above with anyone you know who is new in his or her career.
