At his annual address, Marquette University President Mike Lovell announced a Grocery Challenge that is open to the campus community. Bringing a grocery store to campus and Near West Side neighborhood residents has been a focus for President Lovell since he came to Marquette. This is an exciting opportunity to learn about the Near West Side neighborhood, understand the complexities of the grocery store business, and become aware of innovative models of grocery.

We had a great discussion on the Grocery Challenge at our last Neighborhood of Neighborhoods meeting, too. Thank you to the residents and community members who joined us to discuss ideas for this initiative! Keep an eye out for more updates in the coming weeks, and check out the Facebook Live footage here.

Learn more about the challenge and how to participate here and check out additional media coverage below.

Italian Conference Center | 631 E. Chicago Street

Each year, the City of Milwaukee and Take Root Milwaukee host an annual Homeownership Fair to encourage home buying in the city and to market City-owned properties and resources. It's also a chance for residents to learn about loans and grants available to both homebuyers and existing homeowners.

DCD Real Estate/STRONG Neighborhoods and NIDC will once again staff two tables at the event this year. Residents can connect with lenders, realtors, homeownership specialists, neighborhood organizations and attend workshops on the home buying process and home rehab. Resources for foreclosure prevention will be available.

Learn more about this annual event on the Department of City Development Facebook Event Page.

"She fell in love with one historic home, which led to another"
When Kate Finerty moved to her Victorian home in the Concordia neighborhood, it was a three-step process. First she fell in love with the area. Next, a friend who lived in the area suggested she look at a house that was going up for sale. Third, she found out a neighbor's five-bedroom 1904 Victorian went up for sale.
