KEEPING UP WITH KEITH
IN THE NEAR WEST SIDE

Friends of the Near West Side:

We've started 2017 as a force to be reckoned with and I couldn't be more excited. There are already so many great efforts in the works for the Near West Side!

We kicked off a Grocery Challenge this month, coordinated by Marquette University, which invites the Near West Side community to come together and collaborate on grocery options for our neighborhood of neighborhoods. Join us on February 20, 2017 at the NeON meeting to learn more.

We’re also bringing new life to our commercial corridors with the launch of the Mobile Design Box in the Historic Concordia Neighborhood in partnership with UWM's School of Architecture and Urban Planning. Find details below and make plans to attend an upcoming event in this great space!

We are still beaming from being named a finalist in Revitalize Milwaukee's 2017 Mini Block Build initiative – which will result in improvements to the eastern portion of Miller Valley this September.

And that’s just from the first month of 2017 – it’s going to be a great year in the Near West Side!

Keep it up,

Keith Stanley
Executive Director, Near West Side Partners, Inc.

P.S. As always, if you have great news to share, or would like to see something featured in the e-newsletter, please send us a note at communication@NearWestSidePartners.org.
CENTRAL STANDARD
IN THE NEAR WEST SIDE

On Thursday, Feb. 9, Central Standard Craft Distillery announced it will open a second location in the Near West Side. The new facility, located at 2330 W. Clybourn St. near Marquette University, will be used to keep up with current and future demand, increase product lines and allow for contract projects.

We are thrilled to welcome Central Standard to the Near West Side community and support their continued growth!

MOBILE DESIGN BOX

Friday, Jan. 20 marked the grand opening of the Mobile Design Box at 753 N. 27th Street in the Near West Side. This collaborative effort between NWSP and the UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP) features the research and design work from SARUP faculty, students and alumni, alongside the work of creative entrepreneurs from Milwaukee.

This new pop-up gallery in Milwaukee’s Historic Concordia Neighborhood makes its home in an empty storefront donated by Wiegand Enterprises and showcases research and design work from SARUP faculty, students and alumni, alongside the work of creative entrepreneurs from Milwaukee. This exhibition highlights the new life coming to the commercial corridors of the Near West Side, and the opportunities available for unique business endeavors in this neighborhood of neighborhoods.

Mobile Design Box’s Place Acts exhibition runs from Jan. 20 to March 31. For more information, visit

FUNKY FRESH SPRING ROLLS

Recently, our 2016 Rev-Up MKE runner-up and People's Choice Award winner, Trueman McGee, was featured in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, highlighting his passion for his growing business (Funky Fresh Spring Rolls, of course) and involvement in the Milwaukee community.

Funky Fresh sells every Saturday at the Outpost Makers Market, 1617 W. North Ave. (next to The Juice Kitchen) and the Brown Deer Farmers Market twice a month. This summer he’s adding more markets and corporate clients to his line-up, with plans for a Kickstarter campaign toward his goal of a food truck.
Check out the full story here.

Trueman also brought his Funky Fresh Spring Rolls to NWSP anchor institution Harley-Davidson to provide a unique lunch option to employees. This new lunch option for Harley-Davidson employees also turned out to be Funky Fresh Spring Rolls' biggest event yet!

NEAR WEST SIDE NEWS

"Marquette gets serious about its West End"
During his annual address to the university, Marquette president Mike Lovell disclosed plans for $600 million in renovations that will modify the university’s campus over the next eight years, including a few that will touch on the school’s less developed western reaches.

"Runaway Horses Plagued Vliet Street"
Runaway horses created safety problems during the nineteenth century throughout Milwaukee. Horses were spooked by sudden movements or noises and caused many accidents as they careened in fear down city streets, including Vliet Street. The four-mile-long Vliet Street begins near N. 2nd Street at the east end and, with an interruption between N. 9th and N. 12th Streets, runs to N. 60th Street on the west.

"New life for empty storefronts as pop-up gallery opens in Historic Concordia Neighborhood"
NWSP and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP) recently joined community members for the grand opening of SARUP’s new Mobile Design Box (MBD) gallery. The pop-up gallery in Milwaukee’s Historic Concordia Neighborhood makes its home in an empty storefront donated by Wiegand Enterprises, highlighting the new life coming to the commercial corridors of the Near West Side, as well as the opportunities available for unique business endeavors in this neighborhood.
