SAN FRANCISCO

El Rey Theater holds hope for historic designation

After occupying the El Rey for 39 years, a Pentecostal church has vacated the building, bolstering a longtime neighborhood dream that the neglected icon could be reborn as a community arts center or theater. The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission recently voted to initiate the designation of the 1931 movie palace as a city landmark, a six-month process that will make it eligible for state and federal tax credits and other incentives.

ORANGE

Historic Preservation Consultant hired to help with Eichler home designation

The city is hiring a consultant to work with residents on renovation rules that would make sure Orange’s Eichler homes keep to the famed developer’s style. Developing the standards is a step toward city designating the neighborhoods as historic districts, which would dictate how homes could be changed. The Eichler tracts, totaling 350 properties built in the 1960s by Joe Eichler, have been on the minds of local preservationists for years. SAN JOSE

Church connected to Cesar Chavez named National Historic Landmark

The hall of the church campus where Cesar Chavez learned to organize impoverished farmworkers is now a national historic landmark, recognizing its status as a property of exceptional value to the nation. The former Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission Chapel in East San Jose, California, was originally built as a parish church in West San Jose in 1911.
