Green Week 2016: Investing in a Greener Future
Reduce, Reuse, Recyle NOW!

 
As part of the Green Week 2016 campaign, the European Commission marked the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling for a greener future with a series of events for Green Week 2016 from 3 June to 21 June. Green Week is Europe's biggest annual conference on environment policy, bringing together participants from all sectors of the society for a unique exchange of ideas and best practices. Green Week 2016 focuses on "Investing for a Greener Future". Green Week 2016 partners included KUŞKOR, Green Action Groups, Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce, Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Industry, Cyprus Turkish Building Contractors Association, Environmental Protection Foundation, Güvenir Foundation, Union of the Chambers of Cyprus Turkish Engineers and Architects, Environment Platform, Chamber of Environmental Engineers and Gönyeli SAM.

To launch the Green Week 2016 campaign and battery collection competition for schools, an outdoor event took place at Kumsal Park Nicosia on 3 June. After the opening speeches by Mr.Alessandro Bianciardi and Mr.Rauf Ataöv, the public were informed about the European Commission's Green Week 2016 activities throughout June. The battery collection competition will be open to all primary, secondary and high schools in the Turkish Cypriot community and will highlight the need to dispose of used batteries in the correct way. Students are encouraged to start collecting batteries during the summer holidays and the top 3 schools will be awarded a laptop, a video camera and a digital camera during a prize ceremony in November. In addition to this, 10 students will be awarded a tablet. The guidelines of the competition and battery collection bins will be disseminated to all schools at the beginning of September 2016. 

Construction & Packaging Waste Management and Recycling Panel
 
The European Commission highlighted the importance of environmental protection and recycling with a panel discussion held at Merit Hotel, Nicosia on 9 June with the participation of Anja Schwetje, F.Javier Gonzalez Vidal, İbrahim Alkan, Meriç Erülkü, Leyla Mahrum and Deniz Mat Artun. After the opening speeches by Mr.Alessandro Bianciardi and Mr.İsmet Esenyel, EU policies on packaging waste management and recycling, construction waste management, EU harmonisation on construction waste, packaging waste and recycling, current implementations, reflections on construction and packaging waste management and recycling in the Turkish Cypriot community, possible recommendations and solid waste management project were discussed at the panel. The panel ended with a question and answer session.
Green Week 2016 activities continued with a Composting Workshop organised by the EU Infopoint in cooperation with the Chamber of Environmental Engineers and Gönyeli SAM. During the workshop, the participants learned to make composting from kitchen and garden waste. At the end of the workshop, 10 participants were selected randomly and presented with a custom made composting box.
To highlight the devastating impact that humans are having on the planet, a film screening event was organised at Kumsal Park, Nicosia on 17 June as part of Green Week 2016 activities. After the opening speech by Mr.Davide Bixio, the spectators enjoyed the documentary movie "Home" which was directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. With aerial footage from fifty-four countries, "Home" is a depiction of how Earth's problems are all interlinked.
To mark the importance of the environment and recycling, the EU Infopoint organised an online photo competition in the context of the Green Week 2016 activities. The photos were published on the Instagram and Facebook accounts of the EU Infopoint for public vote. The competition resulted in 3 participants receiving a prize. In first place was Emre Günce, in second place was Harper Özbirim and in third place was Deren Fırat. The photos will be exhibited at the EU Infopoint Public Space until the end of June.
