Newsletter Mail Delivery

The Greater Green Island Informer has become increasingly popular and community members have been asking if it will be delivered to their homes.  Unfortunately we do not have enough funding to print copies to deliver to all six communities in the area so we be delivering to one community each month.  Alternatively you can pick up your own copy at the majority of the shops in all six communities.

COMMUNITY STORIES

Neighbours Day Aotearoa is an annual celebration of neighbourliness that happens all over New Zealand during the last weekend of March.  Some Abbotsford Neighbours braved the wet weather to celebrate with giant bubbles and a hot cuppa together on Sunday 26th March at the Matthew Street Playground.  Neighbours Day encourages all people to get to know their neighbours or spend time with them to build connections that last all year round.  If you celebrated the event with your neighbours send us a picture and or a story before Monday 10th April to be in a prize draw.  Make a post on our facebook page “Greater Green Island Community” or  email the photos/stories to amandar@psotago.org.nz or leanness@psotago.org.nz  Please ask the permission of the people in the photo before posting.

Photos feature:  Charlotte Flawn (age 6) making bubbles.  Georgia Harrison (age 3) is delighted on the swing.  Corrine Flawn and Dave Reid, neighbours, meet for the first time over a cuppa.   Ella Flawn (age 9) also enjoys the bubble mixture in the rain.

Cavy Rocks Dunedin

Have you heard about Cavy Rocks?
There are more and more turning up in the Greater Green Island recreational areas

Cavy Rocks was started in Dunedin by the Caversham Community Development Group.  Cavy Rocks is when people create artworks on rocks then hide them around Dunedin public spaces for others to find.  It is very popular with children and families.  The goal is to encourage creativity and community.  You can join in the fun and find out where the rocks are hidden by joining and following the 'Cavy Rocks Dunedin Wide' Facebook page.   If you find a rock, take a picture, share it with the Cavy Rocks Dunedin Wide facebook page.   You can keep the rock or re-hide it for someone else to find.  There is no requirement of replacing rocks you find with another rock.  If you paint a rock and want it found and posted on the facebook page we recommend you write on the back:  #CavyRocks Facebook.
CREATE, HIDE and ENJOY
Caversham Community Group—Caversham 9012

 A few tips:

-  Please make sure your work is sealed with a sealer. (Sometimes it takes more than one coat)
-  Do not attach items to art rocks which includes stickers or glitter .
-  Take a photo and give a small hint as to where you are hiding the rocks

-  Please do not hide on grass or edges where they could get in the way of lawnmowers
-  You can get the supplies you need from your local hardware store,  Spray sealant is approx $10, brush sets are around $4.  If you can't find any stones, some Garden shops will sell small bags for a reasonable price if you tell them what they're for.

Find our GGICN Cavy Rocks to get an Easter Egg !

On Thursday the 13th of April a GGICN Cavy Rock will be hidden in each of the playgrounds in the Greater Green Island area. If the finder contacts us we will be able to hook you up with an Easter Egg.  Keep an eye of our Facebook page for updates.

If you have a story or article for the May Informer please email these to amandar@psotago.co.nz
or leannes@pstoago.org.nz.

Do you want a free check up with a nurse?  Well you are in luck!
On Thursday 27th April between 10am-1pm Nurses from Well South and Arai Te Uru Whare Hauora are coming to Green Island for the Pop Up Community Services.   In the Lighthouse Church entrance, 222 Main South Road, G.I.

The Greater Green Island Community Network has organised Pop Up Community Services to visit our community each month.  Organisations who are based in the Dunedin City Centre will be invited on the last Thursday of each month to showcase their services and offer free advice to locals.  All community members are encouraged to “pop in” between 11am-1pm, to find out about the services, ask questions and gain free information.

The following services will be visiting:
April 27th - Well South and Arai Te Uru Whare Hauora,
May 25th  - Community Law and The Dunedin Curtain Bank.
June 29th  - Civil Defence

Please let us know what services you would like to see in the Greater Green Island area and we can try to arrange it.  Phone Amanda Reid or Leanne Stenhouse Community Workers on 4700814 or email amandar@psotago.org.nz.

The Saddle Hill Community Board had a meeting last month and one thing that keeps being raised in the area is the lack of a community hub and opportunities to meet people in the community.  We hope to work with SHCB on a family event in the Waldronville area in the not too distant future.  Watch this space!!
In the meantime we wanted to make Waldronville people aware of the below page. A great way to connect with people in your patch and share local information.
Give a Little...Gain a Playground

The Greater Green Island Community Workers are busy filling in funding application forms and having meetings with the DCC in order to gain the $150,000 required to build the Greater Green Island Community Playground.  The playground will be situated in the front corner of the Green Island Memorial Gardens and is aimed at 0-6 year olds.  The DCC are in discussions around their ability to contribute towards the costs of the playground and we will know more by June this year.  The DCC has agreed to maintain the playground once it is built for all.
The majority of the funding will be gained through fundraising and grant applications.  In order to apply for a Lotteries Facilities Fund we require a third of the money for the playground, $50,000.
We now need your help.  If all members of our community could pledge a few dollars towards the community playground and or start fundraising it would help us immensely.  This will be your playground and if you contribute it proves to the funders how much the community wants this to happen.  Any amount helps.  Please find the give a little page at:
https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/ggreenislandcommunityplayground#

Please share this on facebook all around your networks. Lets make this happen!
Thank you from the Greater Green Island Community Network.

Sunstrike is back along with misted windows in the autumn mornings.  Take extra caution in the mornings and drive with clarity.  Especially around pedestrian crossings.
