Greater Green Island Good Sort

Every month we will be highlighting a good sort from the greater Green Island area. This can be an organization, group or person who does something wonderful for the area.  If you have a nomination for a Good Sort please contact Lynda on 470 0814 or

This months Good Sort is actually two people, nominated by Jules Haldane, they are Marion Claver and Joe Thomas.  Jules nominated them for their hours of work they have done in the Community Garden. Despite both working they manage to find time to do the big jobs that keep our garden going.

There’s plenty going on in Greater Green Island
Hot on the heels of the new Highmark Homes showroom and Art of Cuisine dining experience, our new Z Service Station, and our fantastic new Moyles Fresh Choice Supermarket, there is finally plenty of action down at your Sunnyvale Community Centre.
Foundations and floor slab have been poured, fire and security systems are being upgraded, and steel framing has been delivered and is being erected for the new community lounge area. Before you know it the walls will be up, and the new roof, windows and the lift installed.
After a number of years of planning and fundraising the Green Island Combined Sports Bodies Inc are delighted that our community can finally begin to see construction activity bringing the vision to life.
With additional squash courts, gym space, a meeting room, and a dining area that should be able to host over 200 guests, the Sunnyvale Community Centre is going to be a truly valuable asset for everyone in the greater Green Island community.
To acknowledge the support of the many businesses and members of our community that have contributed towards the development a “friends of Sunnyvale Community Centre wall” inside the centre will display the names of individuals and businesses who have made a financial donation to the development. With the project estimated to cost $1,400,000 the development’s Working Party are “almost there” but still require a bit more financial support from our community to complete the development. If you haven’t already done so, your small donation is needed now for what will be a fantastic asset in your community; for you and your future generations.
Join the many other individuals on the supporter’s wall who have donated $100 (can make 10 x $10 monthly payments (only $2.31 per week!)), and the many businesses who have donated $1,000 (can make 10 x $100 monthly payments (only $23.08 per week!).
When you, your friends, and your future generations frequent this community facility, your own name, or that of your business, will be viewed with pride knowing you “did your bit” to support this fantastic facility.
Donations (lump sum or regular payments) can be made to the Sunnyvale Community Centre Donations account at Westpac 03 0903 0384391 03. Payments can also be made at the Green Island, Mosgiel and Dunedin branches of Westpac. Include yours or your business name and contact phone number as reference and we’ll be in touch to confirm how you want your details displayed on the wall.
Want to know more? We’ve a Facebook page “Sunnyvale Community Centre” and check out our website In particular have a look at our development video, the link to which is on the right of our website Home page.
Amongst numerous others, the Sunnyvale Community Centre Working Party would like to acknowledge the fabulous support provided to our development by the Dunedin City Council, Otago Community Trust and Lotteries Commission.
