April is National Poetry Month! We hope you'll join us on Sunday, April 17 at 4 o'clock for the biannual community poetry reading, hosted by West Tisbury Poet Laureate Emma Young. Help keep the tradition alive: come read a poem you wrote, or a poem you love, or just listen! And next time you're in the library, take a minute to peruse Amber's Poetry Month display in the lobby. New poetry books can always be found on display downstairs in the stacks next to the poetry section.

A crowd gathered in the library's community room Saturday afternoon for a reception with April's featured artist, Jack Ryan. Mr. Ryan, who many will know from the Vineyard Haven Post Office, attended the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan, and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. His drawings, which feature mostly New York City architecture, are in pen-and-ink, in a technique called stippling, wherein he creates thousands of tiny dots with his pen to bring the images to life. If you missed the reception, Jack's art will be up throughout the month of April.

The photographs of Astrid Tilton will be displayed on the library's lower level this month in an exhibit titled Realizing Waste. Ms. Tilton, currently a Senior at the MV Charter School, was inspired to photograph plastic bags in nature through her work, along with the Vineyard Conservation Society, on creating a bylaw banning single-use plastic bags on the Island. Both Ms. Tilton's and Mr. Ryan's exhibits are free and open to the public. Stop by anytime the library is open to check them out!

We would like to remind our patrons that the library lends Chromebooks for use inside the library. Chromebooks are web-based notebook computers, which can be used for email, word-processing, web-surfing and more! Check out a Chromebook and find yourself a cozy nook to settle into and get some work done.

April's calendar of events features community dance, live music, crafts, movies, and... three book groups! Read on to find out more...
Sunday Jazz is back by popular demand! This past Sunday's concert, featuring Jeremy Berlin, Eric Johnson and Steve Tully, was wonderful. Eric Johnson will present two more jazz Sundays in April. Each event features a different combination of talented local musicians: April 10 (Don Groover, Mike Tinus & Tauras Biskis) and April 24 (John Alaimo & Mike Tinus), both at 4pm. Thank you to the West Tisbury Library Foundation & Friends of the West Tisbury Library for their generous support of music programming.
On Wednesday, April 13, the West Tisbury Library, in collaboration with the MV Film Center, will present the Annual Jonathan Revere Memorial Film Night with a screening of the The Lunchbox. Come early for fabulous Indian food prepared by chef Uma Datta and live piano music by Island musician Michael Haydn. Doors open at 6:30pm, and the film will screen at 7. This event is made possible by the Friends of Jonathan Revere, the Friends of the West Tisbury Library, and the MV Film Center.
A reception will be held for the Martha's Vineyard Cultural Council 2016 grant recipients on Tuesday, April 26 at 7pm at the MV Film Center. Recipients will present their work. Come get a taste of what grant recipients are doing, meet Council members, and enjoy an evening of arts, music and fun! Refreshments will be served. All are invited to this free event.

This month, the library is launching our "YA Café" (for teens) and "Young at Heart" (for adults) Book Clubs; both will be discussing the same YA novel: Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon. The NY Times calls Yoon’s coming of age debut novel “gorgeous and lyrical.”  Please call or visit the library to reserve your copy of this book.
These clubs will be hosted by WT Librarian and YA enthusiast, Andrea! Light refreshments will be served.

Ms. Kirn will teach songs with movement from all over the world, with highlighted songs from her recent visits to Haiti, Kenya and South Africa as part of the Song Exchange Program. Refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to all. We hope you'll join us!

Martha’s Vineyard and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines officially became Sister Islands in September 2014, formalizing a relationship between the two islands that stretches back to the 19th century. Read more about the Sister Islands initiative HERE. The West Tisbury Library recently received a gift of books about the Caribbean nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. These books were brought to our island by the Honorable Selmon Walters, Consul General of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and his delegation.  This gift is for the whole island so that we may learn about our sister island. The books range in subject from pocket-sized tour guides and coffee table photo books, to essay collections about the various Prime Ministers, notable scholars, and the nature of the islands. These books are on display in our Travel section and are all available for all patrons.

The library hosted its annual Spring Egg Hunt at the end of March, and as always, it was a blast! View pictures from the event in the Facebook album
