GSCC Update - January 6, 2021
From the Lead Pastor:

Yesterday, I ran across this famous quote from Cornel West, "Justice is what love looks like in public". Then I saw it again in an online ad as a t-shirt. (I went back to buy it, but couldn't find the ad again. Future shopping list item.) I'm thinking much about how we show our Christian love in a time that cries out for justice as a part of peacemaking.

Then I saw another shirt-saying posted in a picture by a dear clergy friend who serves as Senior Pastor of Community Christian Church in Kansas City, "The arc of the moral universe isn't going to bend itself. So get involved."

Then literally two posts down was our General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Rev. Teresa Hord Owens, sharing an article about the unveiling of a 16 foot Black Lives Matter banner at National City Christian Church in Washington DC in response to racial hatred, today, while hundreds, if not thousands, of white extremists are joining protests in favor of outgoing President Trump.

Then I saw a post from another clergy friend in Minneapolis sharing images of the Washington National Cathedral, also in DC, depicting thousands of origami doves suspended in a wavy flight pattern through the long gothic nave (main sanctuary) of the cathedral, symbolizing hope and optimism for 2021. (See pictures above.)

How are we (you and I, our families, our congregation, our community) showing our love publicly as justice in this time that cries out for the love of God?

As we ponder this into being, please join me in lifting up:

A Prayer for the Nation
taken from our Chalice Hymnal, #723

Almighty God,
You have given us this good land as our heritage.
Make us always remember Your generosity and constantly do Your will.
Bless our land with honest industry, truthful education, and an honorable way of life.
Save us from violence, discord, and confusion, from pride and arrogance and from every evil course of action.
Make us who came from many different nations with many different languages a united people.
Defend our liberties and give those whom we have entrusted with the authority of government the spirit of wisdom, that there might be justice and peace in our land.
When times are prosperous, let our hearts be thankful; and, in troubled times, do not let our trust in You fail.
We ask all this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
