VHCA PRESIDENT RESPONDS TO CALLS FOR COMMENT ON LATEST PROTEST ACTION

Speaking about today's protests, Victorian Hire Car Association President Mr. Rod Barton remarked that although many members of the hire car and limousine industry believe that causing serious inconvenience to the public was not necessarily the best strategy to draw attention to the appallingly unfair way the Andrews Government was handling compensation for licences and the restructuring of the commercial passenger industry, he and the VHCA membership understood very well the frustration and anger which has led to blockades like the one this morning across the Bolte Bridge.

“We did not direct our membership to join the blockade, but left it to each hire car licence holder to follow their conscience on this particular occasion.” Mr. Barton said.

“As an Association that provides high standard professional services to the public, particularly the corporate and tourism sectors, we are acutely aware that it is not our clients, nor the motorists of Melbourne that have created this situation where anger and frustration has boiled over, but the ineptitude of the Andrews Government. We are not asking for special treatment, only fair and just treatment."

"The Andrews Government began the process of deregulation stating its commitment to fairness: fairness in compensation to licence holders, and to a level playing field. But there has been nothing but disrespect, confusion and financial hardship for our industry, and the Premier is either not listening or doesn’t care.”

“We want our industry to be adequately compensated for the compulsory government acquisition of privately owned assets, which the government itself pegged at a high price and from which the government garnered huge financial rewards, and now has decided unilaterally are to be deemed as worth just a small fraction of what they cost."

"We must be allowed to compete in the new restructured environment, but the government is punishing us so severely as to threaten not only our assets, but our livelihoods now and into the future.
It’s not good enough Mr. Andrews to treat us, or any Victorian industry this way,” Mr. Barton concluded.
