The $297.7 million Building Better Regions Fund supports the Australian Government’s commitment to create jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities into the future.
The program will run over four years from 2016-17 to 2019-20.
The program has been designed to achieve the following outcomes in regional and remote communities:
  • create jobs
  • have a positive impact on economic activity, including Indigenous economic participation through employment and supplier-use outcomes
  • enhance community facilities
  • enhance leadership capacity
  • encourage community cohesion and sense of identity.

There are two streams of funding available under the program:

Infrastructure Projects Stream - The Infrastructure Projects Stream will support projects which involve the construction of new infrastructure, or the upgrade or extension of existing infrastructure that provide economic and social benefits to regional and remote areas. The minimum grant amount is $20,000 and the maximum grant amount is $10 million. You must complete your project by 31 December 2019.

Community Investments Stream - The Community Investments Stream will fund community building activities including, but not limited to, new or expanded local events, strategic regional plans, and leadership and capability building activities. These projects will deliver economic and social benefits to regional and remote communities. The minimum grant amount is $5,000 and the maximum grant amount is $10 million, however given the nature of eligible projects we expect most grants will be under $100,000.
You must complete your project within 12 months of executing the grant agreement with the Commonwealth and by 31 December 2019.

Only projects located in selected locations within the Peel region are eligible – please refer to the mapping tool at
to determine if your project location is eligible.

Guidelines for the program are available at:

The “Developing Funding Proposals A Guidance Manual for Practitioners” has been developed to provide prospective applicants with a resource to ensure that they and their project are eligible, they have undertaken sufficient planning and analysis to meet the criteria, and can demonstrate that they can deliver the project.
This resource has been prepared to assist practitioners in understanding and guiding the preparation of a funding submission.  It is recommended that prospective applicants work through the manual, using their project as a case study.
