Congo Connexion

Rally International assists the church in its response to injustice in closed and conflict communities. We work in Democratic Republic of Congo as a local church called Nouvelle Communaute D'esperance (NCE). The Congo Connexion is a weekly newsflash to help you know what is going on in the work, in the country and within our families.

The Work

Planting Trees
When a person grows up living in a place that is at war, simple experiences become complex. Moreover, simple experiences are often lost. I can’t tell you how many times our team has given teenagers art supplies and were met with blank and sometimes even fearful stares. They simply have never been asked to create something before. Our community tries to give children and youth the chance to express their faith through art. It's not something we do all the time, but when we can, we do.
We recently made banners that we are hanging in our churches to show off their work. After teaching on Revelation 4 and 5, we asked the children to draw what they felt heaven would look like. Their eyes lit up when the huge pieces of paper were laid before them.
They drew pictures cars, airplanes, helicopters (helicopter gunships are a common sight where we are) and buildings. Some of them drew our church. One group of children drew guns and tanks. It was the quietest room I’ve ever been in with having more than 50 children in it. We are still dreaming to build a classroom this year and need another $6,000 to finish everything. We have supported children education for more than seven years, but today we want to do more than support it. We want to shape it.

The Congo (DRC)

General Derrick Mgwebi from South Africa, took over as the new commander of the UN Mission for Stabilization of Congo (MONUSCO), on Tuesday. He assumed the position based at the mission’s headquarters in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

He replaces Brazilian, Carlos Dos- Santos-Cruz, who ended his mission towards the end of last year after serving for two years.

CHE Training 1
This week, Euclide and Roland are traveling to bordering country, Burundi. This country has been whirling with war and political instability since last year when its president chose not honor his term length. He changed the country's constitution, repealing term limits.
Community Health Evangelism
Please pray for a safe journey and for them to accomplish all they need to accomplish during their time there. I (Amethyst) am in Bunia, a city that’s about 2 hours north (by plane) from Goma. I am doing a training called CHE (Community Health Evangelism). CHE teaches communities to identify community development issues and mobilize resources to achieve sustainable change. The training is all in Swahili rather than French. I find that even more important, because that is the language that I will teach others in. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to sit and be taught.
