A female spy, Swiss literature & learn Romansh!

What do you know about Switzerland's 4th national language, Romansh?
This February, it has been 83 years since Romansh has been recognized as an official language in Switzerland. In order to commemorate this milestone, Switzerland celebrated the first-ever Romansh Language Week, the 'Emna Rumantscha'! Learn some very useful Romansh expressions in our latest podcast episode and hear beautiful poetry in Romansh in the video at the very bottom of this newsletter.
From Romansh, we move to another Swiss national language: French. The month of March traditionally focuses on the French language and we would like to take this opportunity to introduce an extraordinary person to you: Female spy Ioana Gordon. Hear about her life story, told by Swiss historian Nadine Mackenzie in a virtual reading and discussion.
Looking ahead to the month of April, we invite you to the next edition of the EU Book Club. We will be reading a gripping detective novel that was even made into a Hollywood movie: “The Pledge” by Friedrich Dürrenmatt.
THE SPY'S RANSOM / LA RANÇON DE L'ESPIONNAGE
Reading and Discussion
Female spy Ioana Gordon led an extraordinary life.
After the Second World War, Ioana had to escape her home country Romania and fled to Switzerland, hidden in the hull of an airplane. She spent several years of her life in Switzerland before moving to Alberta, where she spent the rest of her life on a ranch.

Swiss historian Nadine Mackenzie was close friends with Ioana Gordon and wrote down her story in the book “La rançon de l’espionnage”. She will join us for a reading and discussion.

The event is part of the 'Semaine de la Francophonie' and French will be the main language at the event, while also allowing for questions in English.

In the latest podcast episode we put the spotlight on the Romansh language. Romansh speaker Fabia Leoni, Director at the Swiss Canadian Chamber of Commerce, talks about the role of the language in her life and community – and teaches us some Romansh expressions along the way.

And once you’ve listened to the episode you can test your Romansh skills in a quiz that Fabia put together for you. Good luck!
