BS6891:2015 Pipe Sizing
The revision to BS6891 (Specification for the installation and maintenance of low pressure gas installation pipework of up to 35mm on premises) has made significant changes to the installation of domestic pipework. Two major changes are:
There are other changes to the installation of pipework, and operatives should familiarise themselves with the latest document. Any new pipework should be installed to this standard.
- This document now incorporates LPG pipework for Residential Park Homes and Permanent Dwellings. It also covers Natural Gas pipework on Caravan Holiday Homes.
- The method for sizing pipework has significantly changed from the previous method. Rather than using interpolation to calculate the loss through a section (L1/L2) it uses a constant value per metre length. This value is different depending on the amount of gas required, and the diameter of the pipe. However once this is known it is multiplied by the length to give a pressure drop.
In order to assist operatives with the transition from the old pipe sizing method to the latest one we have produced a short training package available through our e-learning portal.
Any operative that had been through the centre before already has a username, and they can log on by going to www.learning.domestic-gas.co.uk and navigating to the "BS6891:2015 Pipe Sizing Update" course.
