TB148 - Use of BS EN 14800 Hoses on cookers

Previously we have advised you (link can be found here) about the new style of cookers hoses produced to BS EN 14800 that are available. BS 6172 (Specification for installation servicing and maintenance of domestic gas cooking appliances (2nd and 3rd family gases)) stated that hoses for cookers installed on 2nd family gas (Natural Gas) must be to BS669-1, with no such specification for 3rd family gas (LPG) installations.

TB148 has been released as an interim measure to allow for the installation of BS EN 14800 hoses on both 2nd and 3rd family gas installations. It is anticipated that a revised BS 6172 will be released within the next 12 months and will incorporate this amendment.

The Technical Bulletin can be found via the engineers section of the Gas Safe Register Website.

Legionella Risk Assessments in Rented Premises

The number of Landlords requiring a Legionella Risk Assessment is rising as more become aware of the requirements of L8 "Legionnaires’ disease - The control of legionella bacteria in water systems". Any rented property should have a Legionella risk assessment carried out at least every two years.

There are a few paths open to engineers to gain the qualifications, and we are pleased to be able to offer the BPEC "Risk Assessment & Disinfection of Water Systems". This is a one day course aimed at engineers who wish to undertake these assessments. Operatives are required to hold a Water Regulations qualification and have appropriate plumbing/heating experience.

Pollution Prevention Guidance

The suite of pollution prevention guidance (PPGs), previously maintained by the Environment Agency, were withdrawn from use in England late last year as a result of the Agency no longer providing ‘good practice’ guidance. The documents have been replaced by new Pollution Prevention for Businesses content on the Government Website which is now live and should be used instead.

Environmental regulators in Northern Ireland and Scotland continue to recognise PPG documents which are available on the NetRegs website. The suite is currently under review to align with Natural Resources Wales and OFTEC understands these will be retitled to GPP ‘Guidance for Prevention of Pollution’ so they are distinguished from the PPGs.

Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure V7.1

As of the 1st July 2016 the latest version of the GIUSP (Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure) became the definitive document for dealing with unsafe situations. When it was released 12 months ago Gas Safe allowed sufficient time for businesses to update their policies and procedures to reflect the new document. It is intended to give a clear message to customers about appliances that may be unsafe, and as such a single sticker (as shown above) with a clear simple message should be the only one to be used.

All businesses should have updated their policies and procedures now and should be working to the latest version. If you have not seen the latest version yet this can be downloaded from the engineers section of the Gas Safe website.
