Industry Updates

There have been a couple of substantial updates that could have a major impact on your everyday work.

BS6891 (Specification for the installation and maintanence of low pressure gas installation pipework of up to 35mm (R1¼) on premises) has been amended. Significant changes to the standard are that it now includes LPG pipework and a change to the method used to calculate pipe size. Operatives expected to be working to this new standard with immediate effect, and Gas Safe will be inspecting against it as of 01 June 2016. Further information can be found in ISU059.

TB001 (Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure) was amended to version 7 in July 2015, and has since been amended to version 7.1. Operatives are reminded that there are a few major changes in version 7 to the way that Unsafe Situations are handled. Gas Safe Register will not be inspecting to this new standard until July 2016 to allow time for the changes to filter through company policies. However operatives are expected to work to the standard as soon as possible.

TB055 (Duties of landlords) and TB112(Duties of landlords) have also been amended.

GSR have also published ISU060(The Eco-design of Energy Related Products Directive 2009/125/EC and Energy Labelling Directive 2010/30/EU) intended to help operatives understand their requirements under the eRP. This came into effect on 26th September 2016 and mandated that engineers provide energy labelling when undertaking work on relevant ERP appliances or components.

All of the Technical Bulletins and Industry Standard Updates can be viewed for free on the engineers section of the Gas Safe Register website. BS6891 is also available to view if you have subscribed to the Standards Subscription.

Oliver's Footsteps Fundraiser

We are proud to support a local charity called Oliver's Footsteps. On 26th March Neill will be undertaking an tandem skydive to help raise funds for this great cause. If you would like to sponsor Neill (and provide some motivation to jump out of a perfectly servicable aircraft) you can visit the GoFundMe page or pop into the centre. All donations are gratefully received no matter how large or small, and there will be some photos appearing of the jump!

Oliver is 5 years old and lives in Lowestoft. Oliver was born 12 weeks premature at the James Paget Hospital and was in the Neo-Natal unit for 8 weeks. Oliver was born with a bleed upon the right side of his brain and he now has Cerebral Palsy which means that he can’t stand or walk unaided and he needs help to do things that other children take for granted. Despite these challenges Oliver is a happy boy with a very cheeky personality, he loves dressing up in his super hero costumes, he loves swimming, horse riding and school.

Oliver’s footsteps is a fundraiser for an operation for Oliver. This operation will be at Great Ormond street London but unfortunately after being selected for the surgery the funding was no longer available. The operation that he needs is called SDR (selective dorsal rhizotomy), the operation is a neuro surgery where some nerves will be cut in the spinal cord. The operation will permanently remove all the tightness (spasticity) in his legs and help him to improve his walking, posture and gain flat feet so hopefully he will be able to walk with less gait and maybe one day unaided. Oliver will then need intensive physiotherapy and specialist equipment once he has had the operation.

The operation will cost £24000.00 plus he will need private physiotherapy as the NHS are not funding the operation, he also will need some specialist physio equipment for Oliver at home after the operation, we expect the additional physiotherapy and equipment could be in the region of another £7,000. We have a long journey ahead of us but with community support we could be one step closer to Oliver reaching his goal.
