Blue River Soccer Association Newsletter
August 23, 2015
Meet the Board

Each week in the newsletter we will be introducing you to one of Blue River Soccer Association's Board of Directors.  This will help you get to know each of us.  Please don't hesitate to introduce yourself to us when you see us at the fields.

My name is Kristin Parker.  I am the treasurer and the recreational soccer referee assignor.  I have been active on the Blue River Soccer Board for 3 years.  One goal I have is to recruit more children to play soccer.  A second goal I have is for our board to continue to be visible at the fields for the children and their parents.   I have 2 children that have played soccer since they were 4 years old.  My son is now 13 and my daughter is 11.  They both have played recreational soccer for BRSA.  My daughter now plays on a travel soccer team thru BRSA.  Both of my kids are playing soccer on the Shelbyville Middle School soccer team.  We all love watching and playing soccer! Outside of soccer  I am a teacher with Shelbyville Central Schools.  In my free time (the little that I have) I like to spend time with my friends and family, play golf, watch my kids participate in their activities, and go on vacation.

What Division is Your Player In?

BRSA determines what division your player is in for the fall season.  Players are divided into divisions based on their age as of August 1st.  The U4, under 4, division consists of 2 and 3 year olds.  The U6, under 6, division consists of 4 and 5 year olds.  The U8, under 8, division consists of 6 and 7 year olds.  The U10, under 10, division consists of  8 and 9 year olds.  Finally our U15, under 15, division consists of players age 10-14 years old.  Your player will be in the same division for Spring Season.  In the fall, we reevaluate the player's division and move them up as needed based on their age as of August 1st.

BRSA wants your ideas. What would you like to see at our Community Day celebration this year, September 26th?  We will be serving lunch.  What would it take to get you to Community Day?  We want to have something for everyone.  Do you have an idea on how we can celebrate our 25th anniversary?  Help us make this the best Community Day ever.  Email your ideas or comments to jdorseyrph@gmail.com.

LAWS OF THE GAME

Each week will review one of the Laws of the Game.  For a complete list of the laws, please review your BRSA Recreational Soccer Handbook or visit www.blueriversoccer.org

LAW 5 - Referees

The referees enforce the 17 Laws of the Game.  There is one difference between soccer and most other sports played in America.  In soccer, the referee may let play continue and not call a foul if he or she thinks that stopping play would give an advantage to the team committing the foul.  This is called the "advantage clause."  The referee should say "play on" when this occurs.  The referee has the authority to remove players from the game and spectators from the sideline if he/she deems it necessary for the safety and integrity of the game.
The referee is ALWAYS RIGHT even when he is wrong.

BRSA has a strict NO HASSEL policy in regards to the referees.  All spectators and coaches, recreational or travel soccer, need to be respectful to the referees or they will be removed from the fields.

Coach Karen's
Tip of the Week

Try to get your player to not be afraid of the ball.  To do this, have him/her bounce a ball off a wall and stop it with his/her chest and feet.  The more they practice this the more comfortable they will be with the ball.

Karen Spitler, Director of Coaches and Player Education
SOCCER PICTURES

Thank you for a great turn out for soccer pictures!  All teams scheduled were present for pictures.  If you ordered soccer pictures, your order will be mailed directly to the address listed on the order form in 2-3 weeks.  After you receive your initial order, you can order additional prints or specialty items online with your order number.  If you have questions, please contact Pro-Tek Photography directly at 317-888-4866 or 800-452-2749.  Our thanks to Pro-tek for another great photo session!

Weekly Parent Tip

Your children's youth sports experience will end and it may happen suddenly.  Hopefully, you will not look back and think, "I wish I had enjoyed it more instead of obsessing over performance or playing time or the team's record." Enjoy the experience; it will end too soon.
