University of Pretoria (UP) students awarded at Youth Spark Innovation Grants Awards ceremony

The School of Health Systems and Public Health and the Southern Africa Resilience Innovation Lab (SA RILab), in collaboration with the Department of Library Services’ MakerSpace, hosted the Youth Spark Innovation Grants (YSiG) awards ceremony for winners of the ResilientAfrica Network SA RILab Youth Spark Innovation Grants at the University of Pretoria’s (UP’s) Hatfield Campus on Friday, 27 May 2016.

The RAN4Gals Technovation Challenge Team visited Bweranyangi Girls Senior Secondary School, Bushenyi District of Uganda

On June 17 and 18, 2016, the RAN4Girls Technovation Challenge team visited Bweranyangi Girls Senior Secondary School, Bushenyi Uganda to train the Technovation Challenge participants in a hands-on session on how to use MIT App Inventor, a software system that provides an innovative beginner’s introduction to programming and mobile app creation. This was also an opportunity for the team to check on the different teams’ progress with developing their mobile application innovations.

Awarding the Eastern Africa Resilience Innovation Lab Youth Spark Innovation Grants (YSiG) beneficiaries

After widely advertising, receiving over 400 applications to the Youth Spark Innovation Grants (YSiG) Call, and a rigorous judging and selection process, the Eastern Africa Resilience Innovation Lab (EA RILab) awarded a total of 17 Innovator Teams as its third cohort of awardees (11-Uganda,3-Tanzania2-Rwanda and 1-Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This grant call was targeting students within the RAN Partner Universities  and the awards ceremony held Tuesday June 21, 2016 at the Makerere University School of Public Health ResilientAfrica Network (RAN) Innovation Lab on Plot 30 Upper Kololo Terrace, Kampala Uganda was officiated by Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, Chancellor Emeritus of Makerere University flanked by Prof Charles Ibingira, Principal Makerere University College of Health Sciences and Prof. William Bazeyo, Dean Makerere University School of Public Health and RAN Chief of Party/Lab Director. Also in attendance were some parents, guardians and relatives to the Innovators to be awarded.

Engaging communities for Innovation

The afternoon of June 22nd 2016, 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm EAT saw the RAN team and Atamba Farm management partner to host a half day Agriculture Hackathon and Exhibition at the farm premises in Wanyangile village, Mbalala, Mukono district. Layered on the premise of engaging potential end users while Innovating, this hackathon was aimed at solving 3 challenges that the farm was facing including irrigation hurdles, machine maintenance and repair related works, optimization and pest control. This engagement attracted 5 innovations including teams from the Solar Irrigation Pump, Solar Dryer, Kungula! Thresh It (a maize thresher with a winnowing component), Silage & Hay Cutter and a team of experts in pests and disease control from Makerere University, Kampala Uganda.

Training YSiG beneficiaries in the Theory of Change Development Process

June 23-24, 2016 witnessed Dr. Harriet Namata, RAN Monitoring and Evaluation Manager take the EA RILab Youth Spark Innovation Grants (YSiG) beneficiaries through the steps of developing the ‘Theory of Change’ for their innovative projects. All the grantees appreciated the process as it enlightened them more on how to further develop their Innovations.

RAN 12th Innovation Garage

On June 24th, 2016 Makerere University School of Public Health ResilientAfrica Network (RAN) in conjunction with Innovation Consortium Limited was delighted to host the RAN 12th Innovation Garage guided by the theme “Catalyzing Engineering Solutions” at the RAN Office Premises, Plot 30 Upper Kololo Terrace, Kampala Uganda. The event brought together a total of 125 multidisciplinary participants hailing from Makerere University, Plan International, Palliative Care Association of Uganda, to mention but a few.

RAN 2016 Partner’s Forum, June 27-28, 2016

The ResilientAfrica Network (RAN) 2016 Partners Forum brought together 60 international and national participants, including RAN partners, USAID officials, stakeholders and development partners under the theme “Leveraging RAN’s Credibility to Propel the Future”. The Forum is an annual engagement characterized by discussions directed towards the growth of RAN in positively impacting communities using ‘Solutions through Innovation.

RAN Resilience Measurement Experts Meeting June 30 - July 1, 2016 at Sheraton Kampala Hotel

The Resilience Measurement Experts Meeting held June 30 - July 1, 2016 facilitated sharing and discussing tools, approaches, and methods within the resilience measurement efforts, sharing experiences and perspectives of recent quantitative data collection efforts of RAN partners in Uganda, Ethiopia, Somalia, Rwanda, Ghana, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. This dialogue informed improved prioritization of resilience factors and greater clarity in resilience measurement while using the workshop platform to improve collaboration, learning, and partnerships between universities, donors, and NGOs in resilience research and programming.
