ADVOCACY UPDATE

JULY 2, 2020

Introducing: Surgical Care Coalition Advocacy Updates

Welcome to the first issue of the Surgical Care Coalition Newsletter! You can expect new issues twice a month. Each issue will include information about the coalition’s activities and how you can support the coalition’s efforts to protect patients and ensure timely access to surgical care.

Explainer: Planned Medicare Payment Cuts

The Surgical Care Coalition’s first action is working with Congress to stop planned payment cuts to Medicare that would reduce payments for surgical care in January 2021. These cuts could force surgeons to see fewer Medicare patients, which would lead to reduced access to care for older Americans and lower their quality of life.

Introduced before COVID-19, the cuts have always presented a difficult future for both surgeons and their patients but will be devastating when combined with the consequences of the pandemic. Read more about the cuts and their potential impact on both surgeons and patients.

Coalition Members Sign Letter to Congressional Leadership

The Surgical Care Coalition members and nearly 40 other provider groups recently sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi asking Congressional leadership to waive budget neutrality. This action is part of the larger effort to stop the Medicare payment cuts (outlined above) and ensure all patients have timely access to surgical care. The coalition is also directly working closely with key members of Congress to fix these cuts. Read the letter to Congressional leadership.

ICYMI: Surgical Care Coalition Launches to Oppose Medicare Payment Cuts

On June 19, the coalition publicly launched and brought attention to the planned cuts—an important issue for many providers. The coalition’s launch was covered by POLITICO’s Pulse Newsletter, Becker’s, Health Exec, and Modern Healthcare. On launch day, the coalition’s website and social media channels went live. In addition to the coalition’s announcement, coalition members made their own announcements and shared with their members. Read the coalition’s press release.

What to Watch: Netflix’s “Lenox Hill”

“Lenox Hill,” a documentary series that recently premiered on Netflix, follows several surgeons and physicians at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital as they balance complicated cases, teaching students and their personal lives. In a recently released bonus episode, the series shares firsthand look at the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. Time said the series is “a tribute to the qualities so many health care workers have displayed—intelligence, empathy, humility—as they rise to an unprecedented challenge.” Watch Lenox Hill.
