November 2017
Hello all. I hope each of you has a bit of time to reflect as we move toward the holiday season. This month, each resource offers a wealth of information, some highly disturbing (Shaun King's expose) and others inspiring (tools for parents/teachers). Because of this, I offer only four, hoping you'll take a deep dive into at least one.
Soul Snatchers: by Shaun King
Offered in a 3-part series (with more to come) is a horrific and altogether real, current story of "government sanctioned police brutality, wrongful imprisonment, wrongful convictions, forced testimony, widespread corruption, and...soul-snatching psychological abuse..." Please read the introduction (at least) to get a sense of what is exposed.
Part 1 - NYPC, DA's office, and City of NY conspire...
Part 2 - The Bronx terrorist detective...
Part 3 - Countering the state sponsored conspiracy...
Tools for Parents

Getting ready for holiday gatherings with family? Don't forget to brush up on your skills for how to talk about race with kids. Here are some excellent resources.

Amplifying an announcement from EmbraceRace: “Nikole Hannah-Jones was named a 2017 MacArthur fellow... one of 24 recipients worldwide. The MacArthur board recognized Hannah-Jones, a staff writer for The New York Times Magazine, for ‘chronicling the persistence of racial segregation in American society, particularly in education, and reshaping national conversations around education reform.’” Check out this website highlighting some of her work.
Each day that goes by convinces me more and more of how important it is that we ensure that our resistance and activism is complemented by a dedication to uplifting the capacity to listen and hear other's stories. Check out these resources that support teachers addressing issues of hate and xenophobia in schools.
