Hello All! I hope this email finds you well. Be sure to take note of the sign-ups for the dialogues I’ll be hosting online these next two months. It’s a pilot project that could continue if there is sufficient interest. This month also offers an array of important information that hopefully will lead you to action on at least one of the topics.

Are you a white-identified person trying to live out an anti-racism practice and find yourself wishing you had you a community of practice you could speak with on a regular basis? If so, please join the dialogue calls I’ll be hosting in the next couple of months. Read this invite and RSVP if you’d like to join!
If you haven’t seen BlacKKKlansman yet, please do so. Then, read this article explaining how white supremacists weaponize language. The same tactics evident in the movie are alive in the present day. And, as this article from the SPLC demonstrates, their tactics have evolved and are more successful than ever. Here is a taste of what should concern you:

“Allsup laid out his strategies to build political power…The first step, according to Allsup, is to downplay the extreme nature of their ideas. Leave out the fact that the alt-right wants to create a whites-only ethnostate and instead focus on more benign talking points, emphasizing their beliefs “in family, tradition, heritage, the idea that it’s okay to be white, strong borders, [and] protection of America’s founding stock.” Doing so, Allsup has continually emphasized, creates plausible deniability. While keeping their rhetoric within the realm of acceptable prejudice, they can promote policies aimed at achieving racial purity while never saying so and giving the game away. Given their limited resources, Allsup and his ilk argue that the most effective way for white nationalists to spread those ideas is not by building their own political institutions but by co-opting the GOP from the ground up.”
In California, the legislature just voted to end money bail. That is something that needs to happen across the nation. These videos, titled The Bail Trap, by Brave New Films are free and extremely useful in explaining why this is such an essential issue. (Please note, however, that last minute changes to the law in CA caused activists to rally against the measure because there will now be a reliance on judges using predictive risk-assessments to determine who gets released. This is a problem that will need continued action to fix.)
Did you know that the White Privilege Conference has a journal? Their new issue just came out and it has a number of wonderful articles, including research, strategies and tools, and creative work. There’s something for everyone!

This article by Gabriella Evangeline serves as a wake-up call to white women hosting spiritual spaces. If you consider yourself a spiritual person and find yourself surrounding by white people as you engage in your practice, consider this and read to understand further: “If people of colour are not showing up at your spaces, you don’t have a diversity and inclusion problem, you have a racism problem”.
How do white (affluent) white kids develop ideas about race? It may not be as straightforward as you think. If you’re raising or educating white children, you may want to take a look at this new book.

Teachers and Professors – Do you want to help develop students’ civic engagement? As essential as it’s ever been, educators need to support young people to take action in support of creating the world they want to live in. This resource from the American Political Science Association is an in depth look at ways to expand civic engagement education across the disciplines and outside the classroom.
