More Creative than Ever

2023 is YOUR year!

I didn't think as a teen that I was "creative" but I’m much more of a creative person then I ever thought I was growing up. For some reason, I thought creativity only meant the ability to paint beautiful art or to play an instrument. But as I consistently try new things, I've realized that creativity comes in many shapes and sizes and it is something that can be learned and worked as a muscle – Dana

“Creativity is intelligence having fun” – Albert Einstein

So as part of our "More Creative Than Ever" series, we want to highlight a few ideas that might help YOU in your journey! Sometimes we look at a quilt or piece of art and think that it's amazing, creative, beautiful and instead of being inspired, immediately think, "well, I could never do that".

Unfortunately, that is a self-defeating thought! We CAN be creative. It just takes time to build that ability. Creativity is a muscle, you must work it to achieve your fullest potential. Just like going to the gym, we need time and effort to build our creative muscles.

Sometimes our defeatist thoughts can be conquered just by remembering that even Karen Kay Buckley and Renae Haddadin took a LONG time to build the skills that created this quilt. "MAJESTIC MOSAIC" took not just the time to physically make, design, quilt and finish but it way more took "invisible time" to build the skills that made it happen! I asked Renae how long it took her to quilt that particular quilt. She responded with “30 years?” After a little bit of thought, she amended it to only 14 years but that’s how long it can take! She didn’t learn to quilt like that in her first year!

The skills we work on now are the ones we will be using in the next year and afterwards. So what do you want to get better at? This month, set a goal to try something new.

  • Inspiration - Where can you find a new idea?

  • Try a new technique. Have you made a string quilt? Have you ever tried knitting cables?

  • Make a plan to learn - How do you want to get better? Are you going to take a class or watch a youtube video? THEN JUST PRACTICE!

  • Give yourself permission to fail once or twice (or even a LOT) on the way. We don’t have to be perfect or even GOOD at things we enjoy! Do it for the love of art. Donate projects that are not your personal cup of tea.

Take a photo of where you are now and tuck it away....then you can look back and see how far you can come in a month! On Facebook and Instagram, you can Tag @yarnonthecorner or @quiltsonthecorner to share your progress! We would love to support your in your growth!

We can’t wait to see your posts!
