Help Us Promote the Benefit Auction!

Thanks to our amazing members, we have a record-breaking number of Benefit Auction quilts this year! Are you a participating artist? You can get your very own artist badge with your own artwork. Images are perfect for sharing on Facebook or Instagram. Just send an email to auction@saqa.com and we will email you a digital file.

The Annual Benefit Auction is our premier fundraising event. All proceeds help support SAQA's exhibition programs, publications, and education outreach. Plus, the purchase and promotion of auction quilts help increase the recognition of art quilts and the artists who make them. Bidding will take place online from September 11 through October 4, 2020.

Board Nominations

Each year we ask for nominations for Board of Directors appointments. The appointments are for three years with the option to renew once for another three years. Nominations are presented to the Board for a vote in January, but the new Board members don’t take office until the conference in April.

Any member can make a nomination and you can self-nominate. Please send us the names of all SAQA members who have contributed greatly to the association, have a good grasp of the overall organization, and will be strong leaders as we move forward.

Please send a short paragraph about why these people should be considered and their contact information to Jayne Gaskins jaynegaskins@comcast.net by September 2nd.

Dusk to Dawn at Taiwan International Quilt Exposition

August 26th - 25 Million Stitches: One Stitch, One Refugee

Presented by Surface Design Association

Join project founder, Jennifer Kim Sohn, with guests Elaine Archibald and Maggy Rozycki Hiltner as they share a snapshot of refugee issues, the process of undertaking this project, and stories about the communities of participants. Begun in May 2019, 25 Million Stitches draws attention to the plight of 25 million global refugees. The stitches visually represent the number of people in the world today who are refugees from their homeland.

Two thousand fabric panels were hand-embroidered by over 2,100 people from all across the globe, with each stitch representing one refugee. Juxtaposing textile media, which evoke feelings of familiarity and belonging, with the hardships of stateless refugees, the installation creates an interactive experience that allows visitors to feel the enormity of the situation. It also seeks to emphasize that each refugee is a unique individual human being. The original goal of 25 Million Stitches has already been reached. Panels will be on display in museum settings starting in Sacramento in June 2021.

Its book-and-journal-blend format with 350 photos reveals today's latest work and designs and also serves as a long-term creative reference. Survey Snapshots

Each week we’ll post a few snapshots but this is the just tip of the iceberg! We’re working on the analysis of a wealth of valuable and actionable data, so look for the full report before the end of the year. We asked you about exhibitions. Here's what you told us:
1.   Exhibitions ranked high overall. Opportunities, in order of importance are: (1) Global and Regional in-person (2) SAQA Journal and Art Quilt Quarterly (3) SAQA virtual galleries (4) Global & Regional Trunk Shows.
2.   Three most desired types of exhibition innovations: (1) Partnerships with other organizations or artists (2) Exhibitions with no themes or other restrictions (3) Artist or curator video interviews.
3.   Additional exhibition interests, in ranked order: (1) Virtual exhibitions (2) Collaborations with artists of other media, or with other professionals (3) Sales of art in the SAQA store.
